Cavo Vezal Deluxe

Just returned from a week stay at Cavo Vezal. I will start by saying that the Cavo Vezal is not a bad hotel, however we had a disappointing experience as the hotel didn’t meet any of our expectations. I would rate it a three star hotel max. I’m sure for some people a stay at the hotel will be pleasant, however for the more experienced (luxury) traveller I would recommend to look for accommodations when travelling to Zakynthos. The good thing about the hotel is that the complex and rooms are clean and well kept and most staff are friendly. All other things however are just mediocre. When arriving at the hotel, the check-in process was done quite efficient. We travelled with 3 persons. When completing some forms we were offered a welcome drink, however we were told only 2 drinks would be offered as that’s the policy. This must have been the strangest welcome we ever received in a hotel. The design of the hotel and the vibe it want to create is clear, modern , trendy and tranquil. The complex is made up out of several buildings with separate pools that are not connected to each other. Its a small hotel but feels even smaller because of this. It just doesn’t feel as one resort. You may end up somewhere without music, bar or sun beds depending on what pool you are able to find a spot. The hotel does not offer service at the pool. We opted for a swim up room and paid a surcharge. This turned out to be an absolute waste of money. We had a small pool, shared with 2 other rooms. It was hardly used by us or any of the other guests because it was located near the road and also the main entry to the hotel. A big outside air condition unit was located next to the pool making a constant noise and also lots of guests, staffs, delivery trucks and other cars etc. passing by. It was just uncomfortably noisy. We stayed in the room with 3 persons. The pool bed on our own terrace was very small and could accommodate all of us. Some other swim up rooms were located directly to a larger common pool and seem to be better positioned. People staying in one of those rooms complained about lack of privacy. The room itself is basic and very minimalistic. No decorations on the walls and a tiny TV (in case you want to use it). The main beds were good. To sofa bed was horrible. We asked a couple of times for a mattress change (done immediately) however we ended up with two mattress on top of each other and it still felt like sleeping on a deckchair. Remember that the third person paid the same amount as the other two! The shower was good. The toilet and sink area was tiny with the water pressure being extremely low (although in the shower it worked well). It took a long time for to water reservoir of the toilet to be filled up and the tap at the sink was almost impossible to use because of this. Using the toilet required some planning. There was a small safe in the room , some slippers and 2 robes. Curtains were made to narrow making impossible to fully close them. There’s free WIFI in the hotel and it worked fine for us. Around the pools there were loungers with thick cushions on them. Unfortunately also in this hotel the sunbeds were already being claimed by other guests in the early morning. There wasn’t an active policy enforced to remove them even though it’s mentioned. There is a big issue with the pool towels ... at check in you were told you can exchange your towels for new ones however you are told when asking for a towel change: NO, you can only change them every other day, that’s the hotel policy NO, we don’t have clean ones, ask tomorrow NO, you can come back in 1 hour NO, we only exchange towels during pool hours (till 1900h) NO, you can only change them till 1800 We ended up with only 2 towel swops during our stay. Another lack of policy to manage the towels. It’s even more frustrating when you notice some couple’s using 4 pool towels. It does explain the problem why the hotel is not able to provide enough towels for everyone. Food: There’s a breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet. Breakfast is the same every day but enough choice and tasty. Lunch and Dinner buffets are basically the same. Sometimes you will see items from the day before (stop food wastage I guess). There is sufficient choice although most dishes contain pork meat. Be aware! The dessert buffet was available same during each meals and were good. Once per week you can have dinner at the a-la-carte restaurant. Also during the day this restaurant offers a small menu with small meals during the day. The restaurant was good and we preferred to us it for lunch and dinner. The bar menu is bad. The card does not include many items, which wasn’t the main problem though. Big issue is the quality of the drinks. Beer and wine were fine. The cocktails are made the same way as you would make lemonade.. The soft drinks were absolutely terrible. I suggest to just order Soda. Small bottles of water are not included in de bar menu. Just down the road is a small supermarket where you can buy better drinks. One time some confusion about our coffee order and we ended up getting lectured by a lady about the difference between iced coffee and ice latte (although made the same by thel bar staff). Very unprofessional. I’m ok if someone feels the need to correct me about my order, however hotel staff should always keep in mind how they talk to their guests (even if they are having a bad day). This was the first all-inclusive hotel we stayed at and where we just couldn’t spend a full day relaxing. Luckily we had a rental car and explored the island. Lost of nice places , beaches , viewpoints and boat trips to be made. There’s free parking behind the hotel in a olive grove. We enjoyed Zakynthos a lot, however this review is about the hotel and not about Zakynthos in general. The entertainment was very poor. I wasn’t sure if I should mention this in the review as I’m sure the artist did practice a lot for their performances. All performances however sounded like attending a bad Karaoke party with drunk people. It was very unpleasant to listen to. I conclude by repeating that Cavo Vezal is not a very bad place to stay at, we just didn’t like the room, hotel layout and also feel it should be managed more professionally. Again everything is just mediocre and we would not visit this hotel again. In case you do consider the hotel for your next stay please make sure to rent a car and explore the island. I also suggest to opt for the cheapest room available as any upgrades are not worth it imo. Don’t get disappointed as we did.
