We stayed at both Catalonia Yucatán Beach (1 night) and then moved to Catalonia Yucatán Resort & Spa, and overall had a good but mixed experience.
The Deluxe Premium rooms are essentially the same on both sides, but the Resort & Spa side has a clear advantage with more restaurants, more bars, and better overall food variety, plus small touches like a coffee maker in the room and the option for late check-out (if available), which made a difference.
Food:
The buffet was repetitive but consistently good. The standout restaurants for us were the Japanese restaurant and Beloved — both were excellent and worth booking early.
Service:
Staff were generally good, friendly, and helpful, which made the stay smoother overall.
Beach & Water:
The beach was cleaned of sargassum and swimmable, which we appreciated. It’s rocky, so water shoes are a must, but it’s great for snorkeling with lots of fish. Because of the wave barriers, the water is calm — don’t expect big waves.
Atmosphere & Entertainment:
This is a quiet, low-key resort. Very relaxing if that’s what you want, but entertainment is minimal. Even the surrounding Puerto Aventuras community winds down early (around 10 PM), so don’t expect nightlife.
Drinks:
Hit and miss — some were great, others not so much depending on the bar and bartender.
Location & Extras:
The resort is in a gated community (Puerto Aventuras), which feels safe, small, and easy to navigate — a big plus. There’s a small downtown area that’s nice and quiet, good for a short walk. The public beach is clean and well maintained, but overall uneventful.
One downside — prices outside the resort are quite inflated (around $10 CAD for a beer and $30+ CAD for a simple meal), which adds up quickly.
It’s also about an hour from Cancun airport, so the transfer can feel long after a flight.
Overall Pros:
• Safe, gated, easy-to-navigate location
• Calm, swimmable beach with good snorkeling
• Friendly and helpful staff
• Solid food with a few standout restaurants
• Relaxing atmosphere
Cons:
• Very quiet, limited entertainment
• Drinks inconsistent
• Beach is rocky (bring water shoes)
• Repetitive buffet
• Expensive options outside the resort
• Far from the airport
Final Thoughts:
This is a good option if you want a calm, relaxing vacation and don’t care about nightlife. If you’re looking for energy, music, or a more lively beach, you may want to look elsewhere. We might come back, but with adjusted expectations.
