The great thing about a Four Seasons stay is consistency. The Four Seasons Mahe is no exception. We found this to be a perfect spot for rest and relaxation. While the resort is spread out and step in some places, that’s a major part of its charm. The views are just spectacular from everywhere. The villas themselves are very private and create the feeling that you are in your own private oasis. We have stayed at many Four Seasons resorts, in villas, and of all of our experiences, we think Four Seasons Mahe may be our favorite. All the main areas of the resort are grouped together for convenience, and getting around is a simple call or text on the Four Seasons app. A driver was always available within just a few minutes to shuttle us to wherever we needed. The beach staff was great and always available to make sure we had everything we may possibly need to make a beach day enjoyable. Cold water, towels, food, drinks. Anything you need they make happen. Special thanks to Jonathan for his exceptional hospitality. We enjoyed dining at all the restaurants. The steak shack experience on the beach was a treat, and the amazing Indian cuisine at the Kannal bar, with special hospitality from Chakana and Yvonne, was most memorable. Many thanks to both Bianca and Moe for a gracious visit to Four Seasons Mahe. We definitely look forward to a return trip in the future.

It was as far from my original intention or expectation as possible that I would feel the need to rate this resort a 3 out of 5. However, needs must and a full and frank review must prevail; please see the "why" below. We stayed for one week at the resort in May in a Serenity Villa, the highest one-bedroom villa category at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles on Mahé. It is difficult to review this property without sounding, at least initially, like an overexcited travel brochure: the setting is not merely beautiful, but almost indecently so. Nature has bestowed upon this resort an embarrassment of riches. Unfortunately, however, nature also ended up doing rather too much of the heavy lifting. Let me begin with what is indisputably exceptional. The view from our villa was one of the most extraordinary I have encountered anywhere in the world. The villa sat high above Petite Anse, enveloped by thick tropical vegetation, with the bay opening beneath us in successive bands of luminous turquoise, aquamarine and deep Indian Ocean blue. The white crescent of beach curved around the foot of the densely forested headland; villas appeared intermittently through the canopy; and, beyond the bay, the mountainous silhouette of Mahé dissolved into the horizon beneath enormous sculptural clouds. The effect was almost absurdly picturesque. Waking there felt less like occupying a hotel room than somehow having taken up residence inside a screensaver. From the terrace, the plunge pool appeared to hover above a green amphitheatre of palms and jungle, with the sea occupying the entire middle distance. Even the occasional tropical cloudburst only added further theatricality to the scene. The photographs are spectacular, but the reality is better: the scale, colour and depth of the landscape cannot quite be flattened into two dimensions. The Serenity Villa itself was also exceptionally well maintained. Whatever criticisms follow—and there are several significant ones—they should not obscure the fact that the physical upkeep of our accommodation was first-rate. The pool, terrace, woodwork, external areas and interiors were presented beautifully, and the villa retained that rare quality of feeling both thoroughly cared for and comfortably lived-in. Its indoor-outdoor configuration made complete sense in this environment, and there was something really pleasurable about moving between the shaded veranda, the private pool and the glass-fronted interior while the whole of Petite Anse unfolded below. The villa’s name, however, proved to be an unfortunate exercise in irony. Rather than serenity, our principal daytime accompaniment was a near-constant mechanical symphony of pneumatic drilling emanating from works being carried out at adjoining private residences. This was not an occasional hammer, a brief maintenance intervention or the kind of background activity one reasonably tolerates at any operating hotel. It was sustained, intrusive construction noise which accompanied us through the day, every day: an industrial percussion section placed alongside what was supposedly one of the resort’s most private and peaceful villas (!). Management did make efforts, once the matter was raised, to curtail or stop the disturbance, and I give due credit for that. The individuals involved appeared genuinely concerned and did try to assist. Nevertheless, the underlying position remained deeply disappointing. We had paid the full and very substantial price for a week in the resort’s highest one-bedroom category. There had been no advance warning that significant works were taking place close enough to our villa to be plainly audible throughout the day. That information would self-evidently have been material to our decision as to whether to travel on those dates, whether to select that category, or whether to stay at the resort at all. At this level, it is not sufficient to respond sympathetically after the guest has discovered the problem. The purpose of luxury hospitality at the level the FS targets is not merely to apologise elegantly for foreseeable friction; it is to identify and eliminate that friction before the guest encounters it. A villa marketed on serenity and privacy should not come with an involuntary soundtrack resembling the excavation of a small municipal car park. Disappointing is an understatement. Petite Anse itself, by contrast, is genuinely magnificent. Although public rather than a private hotel beach in the strict sense, it must rank among the most beautiful beaches in the world. The sand is pale, soft and immaculately framed by granite and dense vegetation; the water graduates through improbable shades of blue; and the enclosing hills give the bay a secluded, almost cinematic quality. It is the sort of beach against which most others subsequently appear to require an apology. The beach also avoids feeling over-engineered. There are loungers and resort facilities, naturally, but the principal impression remains one of landscape rather than infrastructure. At quieter moments, with the palms moving above the sand and the bay largely empty, Petite Anse came close to the Platonic ideal of a tropical beach. Whatever shortcomings the hotel may have operationally, its location is beyond criticism. Food and beverage was, in the round, of a high calibre and constituted one of the stronger elements of the stay. The cooking was generally accomplished, presentation was attractive and the overall standard across the week was reassuringly consistent. Dining against this backdrop—whether high on the hillside or nearer the water—inevitably carries its own considerable charm. The resort has the raw ingredients for a genuinely exceptional culinary experience, both literally and atmospherically. Yet even here, one episode at the Japanese restaurant encapsulated with almost comic precision the wider absence of polish by senior management. Having dressed properly for dinner—“glammed-up to the nines” would not be an inaccurate description—I sat down on a dining chair which had been left covered in fresh paint. Or, according to F&B Management, not paint at all, but residual lacquer from refurbishment carried out earlier that day... This was not quite the exculpation they appeared to believe it was. Whether the substance was technically paint, lacquer or some hitherto undiscovered third category of decorative coating was entirely beside the point. It was a fresh finishing product left on a chair upon which a guest had been invited to sit. Indeed, the explanation that the restaurant had undergone refurbishment earlier that same day arguably made matters worse: it suggested that the space had been returned to service without anyone performing the most elementary inspection of the furniture. The correct response was obvious: immediate ownership, an unqualified apology and a serious attempt to remedy the situation. Instead, I was met with semantic hair-splitting which felt less like an effort to resolve the problem than an ex post facto attempt to re-label it out of existence. “It was lacquer, not paint” is not a luxury-hospitality defence; it is a distinction without a practical difference to the guest sitting in it. The incident was, of course, singular. But it was also paradigmatic. At a genuinely polished property, somebody checks the chair. If, notwithstanding that check, something goes wrong, management does not contradict the guest over the chemical taxonomy of the substance involved. The episode revealed a lack of care at the operational level and, more troublingly, a lack of instinctive ownership at the managerial one. It was precisely the opposite of the anticipatory, gracious and frictionless service for which the FS name is supposed to stand. The resort’s buggy operation was another persistent weakness. Given the steep and sprawling hillside topography, buggies are not an ornamental convenience here; they are the resort’s circulatory system. When that system becomes slow and sclerotic, the entire guest experience suffers. At periods of high occupancy, it simply did not operate with sufficient efficiency. Buggies ordered in advance were frequently late. When one telephoned for a buggy ad hoc, waiting times could be considerable and uncertain. Worse, there appeared to be no consistently observed queue or allocation system among guests: people would sometimes simply hail the nearest passing buggy, irrespective of who had been waiting or who had called first. The result was an atmosphere of low-level transport anxiety wholly incompatible with a relaxing resort stay. One found oneself calculating backward from dinner reservations, allowing increasingly elaborate contingency margins and wondering whether the promised buggy would arrive—or whether it would be intercepted en route by somebody more assertively positioned at the roadside. Travelling between one’s villa, the beach and the restaurants became unnecessarily awkward and stressful. This may sound like a small matter, but it wasn't. Where guests are structurally dependent upon hotel transport, that transport must be prompt, orderly and sufficiently resourced. It should not turn an evening reservation into a minor logistical tribunal. The resort either requires more buggies at peak occupancy, better dispatching, a transparent queuing protocol, or some combination of all three. The great majority of the buggy drivers were fabulous: warm, friendly, engaging and eager to assist. A small minority, however, were noticeably over-familiar. On more than one occasion, drivers appeared to consider casual swearing or curse words appropriate in conversation with guests. Perhaps this was intended as friendliness; it did not land that way. Casual profanity from staff lowered the tone of the experience and felt distinctly out of place at a resort of this positioning and price. This was plainly not representative of the buggy team as a whole, but it was sufficiently jarring to be memorable. That, ultimately, is the difficulty with Four Seasons Seychelles. The property possesses almost everything required to be one of the great Indian Ocean resorts: a spectacular hillside setting; villas with genuinely breathtaking views; exceptional physical maintenance; a beach of almost preposterous beauty; and generally high-quality food and beverage. The bones are not merely good—they are extraordinary. But the soft product did not consistently rise to the level of the setting, the tariff or the flag. Too many elements lacked the final layer of refinement: foreseeable construction noise without advance disclosure; unreliable and disorderly buggy transport; occasional over-familiarity from staff; a freshly coated restaurant chair; and a managerial response more concerned with disputing whether the offending substance was paint or lacquer than with recognising how completely unacceptable the incident was. These were not failures of friendliness. Most members of staff were pleasant, warm and well-intentioned. Nor were they failures of physical luxury. The villa was superbly maintained and the resort is visually breathtaking. They were failures of anticipation, coordination, consistency and managerial judgement—the less photogenic disciplines which distinguish an expensive hotel in a beautiful location from a truly exceptional luxury resort. At this price point, and particularly under the FS name, guests are entitled to expect more than a beautiful room, agreeable food and genial intentions. They are paying for competence made invisible: transport which arrives before it becomes a concern; maintenance activity managed without intruding upon the stay; restaurant furniture checked before service; and managers who instinctively own a failure rather than attempting to argue it into a different category. FS Seychelles offers a setting which will remain vividly in my memory. There were mornings when the light over Petite Anse was so beautiful that almost any criticism seemed momentarily churlish. But a hotel cannot rely indefinitely upon the landscape to settle the account.
