Riu Palace Mauritius

Our stay at Riu was a disaster. While the place itself is very nice with a beach and pools. It is not worth the price. They gave us a twin bed room for our honeymoon instead of king bed which they later on fixed to be fair. The towels and sheets were dirty and we had to ask for changes. There were ants in the bathroom. The worst part was I told one of the waiters my water tasted weird. She took it drank it in front of me and stared at me and then went ahead to change it. I'm pretty sure she gave me the same one. Super rude staff while we were being very polite. I would not recommend anyone stay at this place with this price. They really need to give their staff customer Service training and stop giving excuses for every little problem. Cleanliness and friendliness is the basis of operating a hotel.

Firstly, as always I do not mention names that gave excellent service, mainly because (especially here) there are too many to mention, and I didn't want to miss a name. This hotel is worth the long drive from the airport (1 hr 30 mins ish). And the journey is not that bad, most are done via car. And in my case the driver was friendly and told all different things as we passed them. So, time went quick. I arrived in the midst of the troubles in Iran and surrounding area so the hotel was very quiet. But no matter. As a reminder Palace guests can use the Riu next door (Turquoise) and all it's facilities (Riu Turquoise cannot use the Palace). The Turquoise is for for people in general, including families including those things called children. The Turquoise is on the left (if you look out at sea from the Palace). To get to it, either walk along the beach path or on the beach. Or in the hotel, walk past the bar, restaurants and follow the path (a bit like the yellow brick road) until you reach a little bar, you will then see a big theatre area, and to the right a gate. Just use your room key to gain access. Walk through the seating area, keep going, past the 24-hour sports bar and your'll reach the pool and bar. The Palace is nicer than the Turquoise, waiter service, the quality of sevice, furnishings and in general. There are less bars/restaurants in the Palace compared to the Turquoise. But choose which you want to stay, in simple terms its either tranquil or lively. The palace is more of a quiet retreat, slower pace, no loud music (more soft music/singing in the backgroud), no real entertainment so in the evening there is not much to do, hence people pop over to the Turquoise for the shows and bars. But this is why I always choose a Palace when booking with Riu, as it gives me access to the hotel nextdoor if I want some music, noise, entertainment and additional bars and restaurants, so 2 resorts for the price of one. If you go next door, the difference will hit you immediately as you pass the gate. I will not comment any more on this hotel as I didn't stay there, just "passed through". But to be fair, no real horrors, the staff were nice, I had to go the bar which I don't like. Back to the Palace. There's a buffet restaurant which I thought was quite good, with a good selection of food. Then there are some A La Carte too (but again, more in the other hotel (I din't eat in the other hotel)). Four bars (1 is for Elite guests only), the main bar which is where everyone ends up in the evening, Then there is the beach/pool bar and then the swim-up bar. The service is amazing, nearly all the staff are excellent, very attentive, polite, friendly and chatty. There are a few that let it down, mainly in the pool bar - like to chat amongst themselves rather than clearing tables or serving. One bad experience I had, was I went to the bar, no one else was there. A server was behind the bar, saw me, but din't serve me. But a couple came up to the bar one or two minutes later, and she served them straighaway. Totally ignored me. Pool towels can be got from the pool hut, on the left right next to the pool and swim-up pool. I found there were always sunbeds, as always there were those that put their towels on the beds really early. And also, those that did this and actually come back to their beds until the afternoon. Please remember the little towel ticket you are given in your welcome envelope, one ticket equals a towel. Change them as often as you want. But make sure you get a ticket back when you hand your towel in for the final time as you need to give it back to reception on check-out, or you'll be charged 10 or 20 USD (can't remember exact amount). Beach is lovely, not very wide but OK. Beds available right along it and too far from the pool bar. Drinks - there is a good choice, including branded alcohol. Obviously the bars are really from 10am through to midnight, pool until 6pm. But again, if you want a drink out of these hours, pop along to the 24-hour sports bar in the Turquoise. Coffee shop, located in the lobby - Not my thing to be honest, but it looks really nice and there was always a really good selection of treats and cakes. Smoking - Sorry guys, I am one of those horrible people that smokes! You can smoke nearly everywhere as there are plenty of designted smoking areas. Both the main bar and pool bar there are non-smoking areas. And then you can smoke on the beach and around the pool (well I din't see anyone get told of for smoking). The way I look at it, is respect others before lighting up. For example if there were people eating, or around me on the sunbeds, I just walked about 10 steps to the smoking bin area. There is a small shop where you can get some holiday essentials, clothing and other nick nacks. It is next to the main bar. Safe in the rool is included, and a really decent size. Plenty big enough for my large tablet and all my other stuff. Rooms - Not too bad, large enough and decor OK. Pretty bulk standard. Very clean. But you only really wash, change and sleep in it. Not the best sleep to be honest as the mattress and pillows were not that comfy, but this might just be me. Cleanliness - The hotel throughout is spotless, everything is very precise. I cannot count the number of times I saw a painter, painting. As soon there was a mark, they were painting. The grounds really are immaculate and pretty, you can see there is a very attentive team looking after the grounds. So overall, this hotel is a really nice place to stay. If you want to totally unwind, chill, spend quality time with your partner then this is the hotel for you. And you can always dip on the wild side and visit the other hotel. That's it (I think). Been to RIU this weekend overhall excellent service. The food was woah and especial thanks to chef Jugoo and his teem, if all the service is good but food not good holoday is spoil. I have got the privilege to enjoy both RIU Turquoise and RIU Palace, it was a woah experience. The restaurant service very caring. Will come again.

The highlight of this hotel is Smita.. she is the Best and she got a Lovely smile. Thank you riu palace mauritius. We will be back again 😉
