Riu Yucatan

Just got back from our Yucatan visit....very happy with our experience! It was very busy as it was March break, but we never were without great service and an abundance of terrific food. Can't say enough about the Italian restaurant, as well as the Asian buffet (what a treat!) All buffets were constantly replenished....just fantastic. Towels on pool lounges was a problem, but if you get up before the sun you can grab a few. Manuel serving at the pool side cart always happy to provide cold canned beer for a break from draft. He was lovely! Betty at the lounge bar also primo service! Asta La Vista Baby! Would highly recommend :o)

Hotel staff was mostly very nice and accommodating, but for $150 per person a day could you expect less? Want low quality steaks and mediocre dining in a fishbowl of gluttony? Look no further! Want to get kicked out of your cabana by a hotel employee to make way for someone who set towels on chairs hours earlier, despite signs everywhere saying you can’t reserve seats? You found the spot! Is your pool experience lacking vomit? Thank goodness you found RIU! Book now!

What can I say about this fantastic hotel....amazing. From checking in we felt welcomed. Special mention to Selene. She always had a smile on her face and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel does need some updating, both the grounds and rooms, but I am here on holiday, not to inspect every nook and cranny. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the staff work 24/7 to keep it this way. The most comfortable beds I have slept in. We didn't use the pools near the beach, as it seemed quite rowdy. Our favourite was the chill-out pool Ibiza bar at the back of reception. It was total chill-out. A special mention to Juan, a fantastic barman with a smile on his face, who made the best cocktails....Brandy Alexander our fav. He is a credit to the hotel. Food was plentiful with a lot of choice. We didn't use the Margarita buffet at lunch-time, as with the pools, we found it rowdy and manic. We ate our lunch in the Italian restuarant, which was a lot quieter. The buffet and a-la-carte was gorgeous. My favourites were the salmon and fillet steak. Special mention to Hortencia and Suema, waitresses with a smile. We used the Asian which was good. We didn't use the Mexican or Steakhouse, so cannot comment. The entertainment was good. Our favourite was a tribute to Queen, amazing. A bonus with the hotel was branded drinks, not tasteless substitutes. The lobby bar was good, no waiting to be served. Special mention to Bety for her lovely coffees in the morning. The wild life in the hotel made it really special. The mini forest in the hotel grounds, home to spider monkeys, cotis, etc. and the sounds of the birds, priceless. Please ignore the negative reviews. Some people are never satisfied. Would I recommend this hotel, absolutely. Would I return, absolutely. Thank you for a wonderful 2 week stay.

We stayed at the hotel for 14 days, leaving on the 8th March. I have nothing but praise for this hotel. The negative reviewers must have gone to a different place. Yes, some parts of the hotel and rooms do need a bit of updating, but I am on holiday not to inspect every nook and cranny. The moment we arrived we felt welcomed. The checkin was easy. The wildlife in the gounds, mini forest, are worth staying here....spider monkeys, cotis etc. plus the sounds of the birds. The hotel has 3 pools near the beach, that for us, were a bit rowdy. We used the chill out pool, Ibiza bar, at the back of the reception, and it was total chill out. Special mention to Juan the barman for his smiles and wonderful cocktails. He is a credit to the hotel. The food was plentyfull. We didn't use the Margarita buffet bar at lunch time, as with the pools, we found it rowdy and manic. Our favourite place for lunch was the Italian, and the food was first class, from the a-la-carte to the buffet. Salmon and fillet steak to die for, amazing. Special mention to Hortencia and Suema. The Asian restuarant was ok, we were just spoilt by the Italian. We didn't use the Steak House or Mexican, so cannot comment. The entertainment was fabulous. The tribute to Queen was our favourite. Another bonus with the hotel was the branded drinks, it makes a change to have a proper drink, not some tasteless substitute. Would I recommend this hotel, absolutely, would I return, absolutely.

Good points; very clean, staff are always cleaning. Great entertainment especially poolside, amazing beach. Not so good; pools are dated with alot of missing tiles, rooms are basic and dated, only one power point in the living area. Very poor; food was always cold , speciality restaurants are not very special. Speciality steakhouse has only one steak on the menu. On one occasion we made a complaint to reception about our meal at the Steakhouse. My wife's steak was inedible due to little meat and very fatty. My ribs had no meat on them and the veg was raw and aagain the meal was served cold. We left without eating any of our main course. Drinks were not the best and cocktails were so sugary and sweet. We had a very unsavoury incident with an excursion we booked with TUI but can't lay any fault on the hotel for this.
