Subject: Review of Excursion Experience and Guest Service at Bahia Principe Amber To Whom It May Concern, I am writing to share my experience during a recent stay at Bahia Principe Amber, specifically regarding an excursion we purchased and the way our concerns were handled afterward. While the resort itself has many appealing qualities, this particular situation significantly impacted our overall impression. Our group of six adults booked what was presented as an adults-only boat excursion through a business operating from a building located on the Bahia Principe Amber property. The excursion was sold to us by Federico Lois and advertised as including food, alcoholic beverages, and four separate excursion stops. The total cost was $459. We booked on Monday, 6/15/26, for an excursion scheduled on 6/17/26 at 2 pm. Unfortunately, the experience did not match what was promised. To begin with, the boat we were taken on was not the same vessel shown during the sales presentation. It was also not adults-only, as there were several children onboard. Because of this, alcoholic beverages that had been advertised were not available. Additionally, although the excursion was supposed to include four stops, we were only able to complete two. Each stop lasted approximately 15–20 minutes, which felt rushed and did not allow us to fully enjoy the activities. The most concerning issue was the condition of the boat. During the return trip, both engines experienced mechanical problems. I personally observed a crew member manually pumping gasoline into one of the engines to keep it running. What was supposed to be a three-hour excursion turned into a five-hour experience due to these issues. No assistance or replacement vessel was provided. Because of the delay, we returned to the resort much later than expected and missed out on dining options that required reservations, adding further inconvenience to our evening. The following day, 6/18/26, our group spoke with Concierge Isaac to report the situation. He asked me to complete a written report, and security was brought in to discuss the matter. Initially, we were told that the excursion had not been booked through the hotel and was likely from an independent beach vendor. However, we clarified that it had been purchased through a business operating from a building on hotel property, and that the representative had approached us at the pool. After some persistence, Isaac and the security officer accompanied us to the excursion office, where it was confirmed that the company, Mariana, was authorized to operate on hotel grounds. Isaac acknowledged that he had been unaware of this and had mistakenly assumed another company occupied that space. We then spoke with a supervisor from Mariana, and unfortunately, the interaction was disappointing. Our concerns were dismissed, and we were told that we may have misunderstood the details due to language barriers. This was frustrating, as all members of our group are fluent in both Spanish and English. When we requested a partial refund due to receiving only half of the advertised experience and dealing with significant delays, the request was denied. We suggested a 50% refund as a reasonable compromise, but this was also refused. Instead, we were offered the option to complete the remaining excursions later that same day, which was not feasible as we had already made other plans. The conversation ended abruptly without resolution. After returning with Isaac and the security officer, the written report I had completed remained with security. Although Isaac requested a copy be made for us, we never received one and are unsure if it was properly documented. At checkout, we encountered another issue when attempting to apply a 20% spa discount, which would have reduced our bill by approximately $80. The employee assisting us declined the discount without explanation and did not offer to involve a supervisor. Given the circumstances, we chose to pay and proceed with our departure. Overall, this experience was disappointing and fell short of the expectations we had for Bahia Principe Amber. The excursion was misrepresented, the service recovery was inadequate, and communication between staff and vendors appeared inconsistent. While the resort has many positive aspects, this situation highlighted areas that could benefit from improvement, particularly in vendor oversight, guest support, and issue resolution. I hope this feedback is taken into consideration to help improve future guest experiences. Sincerely, Anthony Alicea
On arrival at the hotel there was very little information given about the resort, checked in, (no welcome drink) shown to our room and pretty much left to our own devices, the welcome meeting the following morning was a waste of time, it was a small tiled room with 3 groups of people all talking ever louder over each other, I honestly never heard a word the rep said. The room was nice, large, clean with decent A/C. House keeping isn't the best, we had to ask twice for the mini bar to be restocked which is advertised as part of the service, we eventually gave up. On one occasion we returned to the room and the bed had only partly been made and the top cover was screwed up and thrown on a table, again we mentioned this but nothing was done. The hotel is clean and tidy for the most part but don't be fooled by the hotel's name, this is nowhere near a luxury hotel, I would suggest 3+ at most, TUI needs to think about how they market this resort, the hotel has a club 18-30 feeling about it most days especially round the pool, we spent every day at the beach, it's much quieter, there was still music playing just not constant drum and bass at extremely high volume levels. The waiting service can be very hit and miss, seems to me they need a lot more staff, we were ignored a few times by waiting staff especially at the lobby terrace. The a la cartes we visited, 2 were excellent Yurta and Portafino sadly Meat was a massive disappointment, no welcome cocktails, a 35 minute wait between courses, the steak was by far the toughest steak I'd ever tried to eat and the fries were cold, they were sent back and not replaced, after waiting a while we just left. We left a review on the app but mysteriously it had disappeared the next day. The buffet was excellent as was the poolside restaurant at breakfast and lunch, both food and staff were great, bar staff at all the bars were polite and very hard working. The coffee shop is great and worth a visit. If you're looking for a peaceful holiday I'd say look elsewhere unless you're prepared to pay an extra $70 per night for a swim up room. This hotel seems to me to be geared toward American college leavers and it's trying to be all things to all people but sadly misses the mark. In a word, disappointing.
We had a Family vacation of 14. Our children, spouses and grandchildren with their partners, and it was fabulous! The Ambar is a quaint resort where we would encounter each other all day long, be it at the pool, lobby or the coffee shop! We also renewed our 50th wedding vows on the beach! It was beyond our expectations! The staff, alla carte, the service was absolutely amazing! Excellent!
The flight with Air Transat was good, but the adventure began upon landing. The Air Transat representative was only in the airport building. The next one was standing by the bus, 300 meters from the exit. We walked 40 minutes along a narrow sidewalk and crossed the road twice to get to the bus. After 25 minutes, we arrived at Bahia Principe Amber. From there, we waited another 30 minutes until we were taken to Bahia Amber, which is 100 meters from the ocean. I'm describing everything in detail because it has never taken me so long to get to a hotel. They quickly checked us into the second floor. When we entered our room, it turned out it wasn't cleaned, and since I never pay the employee, he took our suitcases to the lobby before making sure everything was working. After that, no one apologized, and we were given a room on the third floor. It was 4:30 p.m., and we arrived at 1:30 p.m. The next morning, we discovered a lot of seaweed on the beach and in the water. We only swam in the pool early in the morning. Vendors walk along the shore every 2-3 minutes, which is also annoying. If they were just walking around, but they want you to notice them and talk to them, after an hour I simply ignored them. The food at the buffet is good, but the a la carte is very bad. Only the soup was excellent for our tastes, and we've been to different countries and hotels. On the fifth day, the internet stopped working at the hotel. The next day, it didn't work again, but we were supposed to check in for our flight 24 hours in advance. We contacted the front desk and they helped us. The supervisor and another employee helped us check in. A big thank you to them for that. I think we need to change our vacation destination; we came for the beach and didn't have a full vacation. We've been flying to Cuba for over 10 years, but now we need to change destinations. And lust day we swimming in ocean for short period of time.
I really had high hopes for this resort, but unfortunately it missed the mark of a "luxury" hotel. Firstly, within the first 20 minutes, the dead bolt lock fell completely off and was never repaired, and the A/C wouldn't get down to a certain temperature, which wasn't enough for the DR sun. Secondly, the housekeeping was absolutely horrible! Good luck getting washcloths! The pillows and the top of the bed smelled like moldy/musty mops. Unbearable. When asked to change them, the housekeeping staff had a huge attitude. The housekeeping supervisor even turned her back and tried to ignore my wife. Unacceptable. The grounds are beautiful, and the food was good! Definitely a bit of a frat-boy environment, which I didn't expect from this place. Entertainment was good. No complaints. Sargassum on the beach, but you can expect that in June. Staff worked hard to keep it under control. All in all, we had a decent stay, but for the price I paid for a "luxury" resort, I expected waaayy more. I won't be returning.
