We have just returned from a two-week stay at Grand Sirenis Punta Cana, and after reading some of the reviews beforehand, I thought I’d share our honest experience. Check-in & Room Check-in was probably the only frustrating part of our arrival. It took around 40 minutes, despite there only being a few people ahead of us. After a long flight it felt a little slow, but once completed we were shown straight to our room. We stayed in a family suite with the sliding partition doors. Our first impression was very positive - it was spacious, nicely decorated and perfectly comfortable. That said, you could see where some of the comments about maintenance come from. It wasn’t anything major, just a lack of attention to detail. Our bathroom door wouldn’t close properly because a panel at the bottom had come loose (it eventually fell off), one TV remote had no batteries so we just swapped them between remotes, and there were little signs of wear around the bathroom such as marks around the tiles. None of these affected our holiday, but they are the sort of small jobs that would improve the overall standard. One area we genuinely couldn’t fault was the housekeeping. Our room was cleaned every single day without fail, the minibar was restocked daily, fresh towels were provided and everything was usually finished by around 10:30–11:00 each morning. We stayed in Building 31, so perhaps that was just the route our housekeepers worked, but we never once returned to an unclean room. We left a small tip of $2 each day because we felt they worked incredibly hard and looked after us really well. Staff The majority of the staff were friendly and hardworking. At breakfast, Anna was absolutely lovely. She welcomed us every morning with a smile and was constantly topping up our coffee and water, always making sure we had everything we needed. It was a really nice way to start each day. In the evenings, service could be a little more hit and miss depending on how busy the restaurants were, but we always found the staff attentive. They would regularly ask if we wanted more drinks and checked everything was okay. Occasionally they were slower, but it honestly didn’t bother us because you could clearly see how busy they were. Like anywhere, we came across one or two staff members who perhaps weren’t particularly smiley or engaging, but they were very much the exception rather than the rule. Most of the staff were saying hello as you walked around the resort and were especially lovely with the children, often stopping to chat or make them smile. Pools & Grounds We spent most mornings around the main activity pool and honestly couldn’t fault the effort the staff put into keeping it clean. Every morning we saw staff scrubbing the pool walls, adding chemicals, vacuuming the bottom of the pool and groundskeepers clearing leaves before guests arrived. As the day went on, naturally the pool area became messier with cups and plates left around by guests. Staff worked hard to keep up, but with so many people it was impossible to stay on top of everything all the time. We always returned our own plates and cups, but unfortunately not everyone did. The only area that really let the hotel down was the poolside toilets near the beach. They were cleaned every morning and often closed while being serviced, but by the afternoon they could become very unpleasant. On one occasion there was faeces over one toilet and vomit in another, so I walked back to our room instead. To be fair, a member of staff was on their way in to clean them as I left, but it highlighted just how busy the hotel had become, especially during our second week. Food We thought the buffet was good overall. Some evenings were definitely better than others, but there was always plenty of choice and we never struggled to find something we enjoyed. Unless you’re an extremely fussy eater, I think you’ll find something to suit. Our 8-year-old lived on a fairly beige diet for two weeks, but there was always fruit available so we made sure he ate plenty of that alongside his usual favourites. The beach restaurant was also really handy for lunch if you didn’t want to go back and get changed. There was pizza, chips, fruit, salads and a barbecue cooking burgers every day, which became one of our regular lunch stops. Beach During our first week the beach was lovely. Unfortunately, in the second week the sargassum seaweed became much worse. The staff worked incredibly hard clearing it every day, but it was a losing battle as more washed in overnight. Eventually the red flags went up because swimming through the amount of seaweed simply wasn’t practical. That’s obviously something outside the hotel’s control. À la Carte Restaurants We enjoyed the à la carte restaurants. Our favourite was the Brazilian, which we visited twice. Booking was really straightforward through the hotel app as soon as we arrived. We didn’t need to visit the concierge at all, and cancelling or changing reservations was easy too. Excursions We also booked the Saona Island excursion through the Pool Excursion team and would definitely recommend it. None of the staff were pushy. They approached us once or twice, but happily accepted “no” if you weren’t interested. We booked through Enzo, who was genuinely friendly and so appreciative of our booking. He made a real fuss of the children and couldn’t thank us enough. The excursion itself was a long day but absolutely worth doing. If you’re hoping to experience those crystal-clear turquoise Caribbean waters and beautiful white sandy beaches that you see in all the brochures, then Saona Island is definitely worth a visit. It was one of the highlights of our holiday and gave us the chance to see a completely different side of the Dominican Republic. Overall Overall, we had a fantastic holiday. Is this a true five-star hotel? In my opinion, no. There are definitely areas where a little more maintenance and attention to detail would make a big difference. However, I also don’t think it deserves some of the extremely negative reviews telling people not to book or to change hotels immediately. We found the staff hardworking and friendly, the housekeeping excellent, the grounds well maintained, there was plenty of food, we enjoyed the restaurants, and despite a few minor issues we had a genuinely lovely family holiday. There are so many bars and restaurants to choose from. We couldn’t get to them all, but we particularly enjoyed the Italian restaurant for the food and the Japanese restaurant for the overall experience. The food was great, the drinks were lovely and the service was amazing. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We did have a small issue with our room, but it was rectified straight away, which was excellent. The staff work incredibly hard, especially in such hot temperatures and they really deserve so much credit. Breakfast was definitely a highlight, although we did experience some delays waiting for drinks. A coffee or drinks machine would be a great addition and would also take some pressure off the hardworking staff. We would definitely recommend a trip to Saona Island, which was beautiful, and the children absolutely loved swimming with the dolphins. We also took the free TUI bus to a small shop to buy some souvenirs, which was worthwhile. My son loved the gym and we all enjoyed the coffee shop and sports bar in the evenings. Entertainment was absolutely brilliant, Peter Parker was amazing being able to converse with all nationalities. The beach was beautiful, although there was quite a lot of sargassum. We had a brilliant stay at Grand Sirenis and would highly recommend this hotel. The resort is absolutely beautiful and we were lucky enough to have a room right beside the pool. There are so many bars and restaurants to choose from. We couldn’t get to them all, but we particularly enjoyed the Italian restaurant for the food and the Japanese restaurant for the overall experience. The food was great, the drinks were lovely and the service was amazing. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We did have a small issue with our room, but it was rectified straight away, which was excellent. The staff work incredibly hard, especially in such hot temperatures and they really deserve so much credit. Breakfast was definitely a highlight, although we did experience some delays waiting for drinks. A coffee or drinks machine would be a great addition and would also take some pressure off the hardworking staff. We would definitely recommend a trip to Saona Island, which was beautiful, and the children absolutely loved swimming with the dolphins. We also took the free TUI bus to a small shop to buy some souvenirs, which was worthwhile. My son loved the gym and we all enjoyed the coffee shop and sports bar in the evenings. Entertainment was absolutely brilliant, Peter Parker was amazing being able to converse with all nationalities. The beach was beautiful, although there was quite a lot of sargassum. The staff worked incredibly hard every day to clear it and we really appreciated their efforts. Overall, we had a wonderful holiday in the beautiful Dominican Republic. The only major negative was the 2 hour queue at the airport going home in the intense heat. Otherwise it really was a holiday of a lifetime and such a memorable experience. Grand Sirenis is a beautiful little piece of heaven and we would absolutely recommend it. A huge thank you to all the amazing staff at Grand Sirenis for making our stay so special. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and would love to return! ❤️
