Riu Monica

I would like to address the first part of this review to the problem of reserved sun loungers. Our room directly overlooked the front of the hotel where we could see the queue forming each morning before 8am. There are about 50 sunbeds which are not chained off and these all have towels on well before 8am. Some mornings there were around 50 people waiting to gain access to the remaining sunbeds. Once the chain goes down there’s a rush even if the sun beds are unused for most of the day. There is no need for this; there are enough sunbeds to go round, it’s embarrassing to watch and such sad behaviour. Reception say they have tried everything to stop this; removing belongings at 10am might help. We decided to go onto the beach and use the sun loungers there (€12/day for 2 and a parasol), but surprise, surprise, they are all reserved the day before! It’s better to turn right, a 2 min walk brings you to Playa El Playazo beach where it’s easier to get a sunbed and there’s more space as it’s shingle compared to the sand on Playa La Torrecilla. Our room (354) was large, had a fantastic direct sea view, ample storage space, was very comfortable and kept extremely clean. The staff were all welcoming and professional. The location of the hotel is excellent with a line 1, local, bus stop outside and only a few yards to the tourist train up to the caves. The hotel booked us a taxi to Frigliana and we caught the Line 2 bus back at €1.20 each. The walk back to the hotel from the Bus Station is about 20 mins. The food was good and varied over the week we were there, at dinner the roast meats were excellent and the house wine was good and very reasonably priced. The restaurant itself is more like a large canteen and a bit soulless. The Spanish restaurant was much more relaxing and the mains and desserts served to the table which more than offset the more limited choice. We have downgraded our rating due to the failure of the hotel to effectively deal with the sunbed issue and the ambience of the restaurant

We're currently staying at Riu Monica. It's a lovely hotel. The staff are amazing, without exception. They can't do enough for you. The rooms are spacious and with the whole hotel, spotlessly clean. The food is really good with so much choice. There's always a table and you are shown to one of your choice so no wondering around looking. There's nightly entertainment which is good quality. The location is great. Only a 10 minute stroll to the lovely town with great shops. There are numerous shops and restaurants opposite the hotel. The beach is directly opposite and very clean. All in all, a fabulous choice for a relaxing holiday. Despite reading about the lack of sunbeds, this hasn't been our experience. Plenty of sunbeds and parasols on the grass area which is perfect as it's near the pool. Can't praise the hotel and the staff enough. We are booking again for next year as we're really impressed 😁

Lovely hotel very clean nice staff nice food ..could do with an ironing board not everyone likes to wear clothes creased .

This is our second visit to the RUI Monica and we love it. The rooms and communal areas are light, airy and spotlessly clean. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful from the reception staff, restaurant staff, to the ladies who clean. Location is great, very quiet with a couple of nice bars straight opposite (we recommend the Ship) and a steady 10 minute walk into the centre of lovely Nerja. Prices of drinks very reasonable. Food in the restaurant at breakfast and dinner is tasty and varied with lots of hot and cold options with plenty of salads and fresh fish and carved meats etc. Evening entertainment quite poor apart from a couple of acts. I wont go on about the sunbeds as previous reviews have covered this to death. The reality is that at full occupancy the hotel just doesn't have enough sunbeds or room for them. Yes, you do get saddos that put towels on first thing then don't return (if at all) until mid afternoon but I imagine this is very difficult to police. We gave up and got a couple of chairs and a parasol and went on the beach, which suited us. In summary, lovely, large hotel with lovely staff, great food and a great location.

On arrival at this hotel,we were warmly greeted by friendly staff. Efficient check in. Then we got to our room,yes the room was very nice,all be it very corporate but clean and bright,then we opened the curtains and got a view of a concrete roof. So we complained, they could not do anything till the next day, so we had to live out of ours suitcases for 24 hrs. The next day we moved rooms with an improved view. Only complaint about the room was the towels very small and harsh,not 4 star quality. Food was ok, yes plenty choice, some nights better than others,and like most Spanish hotels food is luke warm. Entertainment was just awful. We managed 10 mins one night. And then we come to the sunbeds, plenty sunbeds but so close together. If you are not in the queue at 8am,for when they remove the chains you have no chance. One day a couple put towels on beds near to ours at 8am, then did not return till gone 4pm. The hotel is large and the majority of people are elderly, they often got lost. For me, while we enjoyed our stay,I would return due to the size of the hotel and the sunbed situation.
