Our family of 5 including 2 young ones stayed in March. The stand outs were 1. Staff warmth, authenticity, hospitality 2. Half board package was abundant almost excessive for the great price; you would never worry about not having enough. Food was amazing at ALL outlets and so were the hardworking service staff and we really expressed our gratitude during the stay. I only ever stay at 5 star hotels and i won’t consider marriott at merlin beach to be one. For me a 5 star hotel must achieve many things right the first time round so let me get to the elements that were not quite there in terms of my expectations: 1. Airport transfer facilities in the vehicle could be so much better with a cold towel or a cold drink. This was provided from the hotel but not to the hotel. The drivers for both were excellent 2. Check in was chaotic. Too many people, too few counters; each taking excruciatingly long. Not the best start to a relaxing vacay. Staff as always was amazing. 3. Breakfast was chaotic. Not enough staff, too many flies. I had to avoid certain foods sitting out in the open as there were like 10 or more house flies buzzing around. They shd really invest in some pest management at the breakfast places. Staff here looked fairly harried compared to the rest of the hotels which is understandable. management needs to help their staff more. 4. Biggest pet peeve - Wonky aircon in room coupled with hotel renovation in nearby rooms not pre informed. I received a note that said there would be intermittent noise and it was not intermittent. It was constant drilling for hours. Only when i called to voice my concerns this would last for 2 days of the 4 days i’m there did i get satisfactory response that the drilling would cease by day 1. Still, having had an awful night with the aircon switching off by itself with an error message at 3am and 6am, i really did not appreciate not being able to catch up on sleep the next day due to literal drilling noises. That being said, the front desk was extremely accommodating and sincere in service recovery which i accepted hence this is a 4* and not a 3* review. But, for me it needs to be right the first time around to be a 5* establishment. All in all, the beach itself is amazing, the people - top notch, facilities awesome so much going on, nice clean surroundings, great spa and massage skills - there is a lot to love about this place. Would i still give it a try? Probably yes primarily based on the overall experienced. But i would be crossing my fingers no hiccups next time :)
