During my 12-day stay at Riadh Palms Hotel in Sousse, I unfortunately had one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had in Tunisia. This was my sixth visit to Tunisia and the fifth hotel I have stayed in, but I have never encountered such an attitude from hotel staff before. The biggest disappointment was the hotel’s hygiene. The waiters regularly served drinks in dirty glasses, and the bathroom was in a terrible condition. The water pressure was extremely weak, the water often did not run properly, and the toilet barely flushed. The hotel is clearly in poor technical condition and is in desperate need of renovation. This is simply not the standard you would expect from a 4-star hotel. That said, I would like to mention that our housekeeper was very kind and friendly, which was one of the very few positive experiences during our stay. Another major issue was the elevators, which were in a terrible state. They frequently malfunctioned, were extremely slow, or required very long waiting times. On several occasions, it took us up to 20 minutes just to get to our room on the fourth floor, which was incredibly frustrating and inconvenient. At first, everything in the restaurant seemed fine, but after a few days everything changed. The staff did not like where we chose to sit and repeatedly told us to move to different tables. We often sat without cutlery for so long that our food became cold. On one occasion, my younger sister became so hungry that she started eating with her hands. When one waiter finally noticed us, instead of apologizing, he rudely explained the restaurant’s internal rules and claimed he was making an exception by serving us at all. According to him, I had ignored his hand gestures telling us not to sit at that table. However, that is not the guest’s responsibility. I came to enjoy my meal, not to deal with the restaurant’s internal staffing arrangements. The same situation continued over the following days. We were frequently ignored while local guests received immediate attention. Instead of clearing dirty tables, the waiters stood around refilling drinks. I eventually spoke to the restaurant manager, who apologized, made sure we were served, and spoke to the staff. The following day, things improved briefly. Unfortunately, the next day the service was once again unacceptable. Every available table was covered with dirty plates, leaving nowhere to sit. We sat at the only empty table, yet once again nobody paid any attention to us. A guest from a nearby table even offered to bring us cutlery himself. At that moment, a waiter approached us, rolled his eyes, waved his hands in frustration, and asked us in a rude tone what we wanted. He then started shouting at me, demanding to know why we had sat there and why we had not chosen another table. I politely asked where we were supposed to sit when every other table was still covered with dirty dishes. He replied that he did not care, that he was busy in the kitchen, and that we were bothering him. This behavior was completely unprofessional. Once again, I asked to speak to the manager, who apologized and personally served us. What shocked me the most was that the waiter repeatedly shouted at me even though I had remained calm, polite, and respectful throughout the entire conversation. The same attitude continued at the Tiki Bar by the pool. The staff were rude and unwilling to help. On one occasion, they refused to give me four drinks even though I pointed out that there were four of us sitting at the table. I was not asking for more drinks than we were entitled to. Another time, I ordered one Coca-Cola, one Sprite, one beer, and one orange juice. Instead, the bartender served two Sprites, one orange juice, and one pineapple juice. When I politely told him that this was not what I had ordered, he insisted that it was and said he would not pour me any more drinks because I would then have too many glasses. I explained that I simply wanted the drinks I had originally ordered, not additional ones. Eventually, he reluctantly replaced the drinks but refused to give me the beer, saying, “Beer is not for you” When I asked why, he refused to explain. Only after I insisted did he finally pour the beer, but while doing so he looked at me and said, “You are crazy.” At that point, we contacted our holiday representative, who discussed the matter with the hotel management. The managers apologized several times and admitted that they were short-staffed. I explained that I completely understand if the staff are busy or understaffed, but I will never accept being shouted at or insulted simply because I asked for basic service. After our complaint, the managers told us that they would personally make sure we were served to avoid further problems. Unfortunately, news of our complaint quickly spread among the staff. At the Tiki Bar, they started mocking me. Whenever I approached the bar, the waiters would loudly shout, “Manager! Manager! Boss! Boss!”, laugh in my face, and obviously gossip about us. Since we only had three days of our holiday left, we decided not to pursue the matter any further. The atmosphere had become so unpleasant that we even stopped having lunch in the hotel restaurant just to avoid further confrontations. I am genuinely disappointed that I have to write such a review, but my experience was extremely negative. During my six visits to Tunisia, I have never before been made to feel so unwelcome or treated as though my presence was an inconvenience. For these reasons, I cannot recommend Riadh Palms Hotel. Unless the management makes significant improvements to staff behaviour, hygiene standards, the hotel’s technical condition, and the overall organisation of its services, I will never return and will strongly advise others to choose a different hotel. Based on my experience, the services provided deserve no more than a 1-star rating, certainly not four.
