Matemwe Attitude

Stayed here after a safari. Extremely quiet hotel which was exactly what we needed after a week in safari. Stayed in the Deluxe villa with partial sea view. Outstanding room and really enjoyed having our own pool as main pool was always short on sunbeds and lacked sun due to trees. Food was great in terms of quality. But I would say avoid the Upepo bar for lunch. The menu and food is great however it takes on average 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes to receive a sandwich/wrap.. they say Pole pole but this take slow a little to far. One major concern I had after hearing rumours of robbery in a few rooms. Daily room cleaning left us feeling very wary to the extent we would not let them into our room for the last 4 days. The guy who cleans the pool continuously told us next time he comes we need to leave the room. (We had villa with pool so we preferred to stay). At start we found this strange. But then he bumped into us in two other areas of the hotel over the next day and he stopped us to again repeat to not be in the room so he can clean. Extremely strange and we did not appreciate being stopped around resort to be told this. Certainly something to be wary off. Otherwise it was a fantastic trip. Hotel and facilities are amazing. Just be prepared for a very quiet holiday if thats what you are looking for!

We stayed in a swim-up villa for 7 nights in July 2026 for our honeymoon. Having trusted our travel providers recommendation we went into our stay with no expectations and we were truly blown away with how gorgeous the hotel is and how wonderful the staff are. 1. Food - Food was outstanding throughout our stay. The main restaurant (Chakula Chakula) is the Buffet option for the breakfast, lunch and dinner. It had varied options each day and the quality was consistently outstanding. The food has both African and Middle Eastern / Indian influence which aligns to Zanzibar’s history. We cannot fault the food at all. There are other options for food in the Upepo Bar and Fukwe Beach Restaurant, which we used to break up the buffet on a few days and consistently used for lunch. 2. Villa - We were in the swim up villa and it felt luxurious. Everything was of high quality and we loved the room. Our swim up pool was much bigger than we expected and because of the space between villas we didn’t notice our neighbours. There is a big dressing room, double sink, two spacious showers (outdoor and indoor) and we can’t fault this at all. We had very few bugs in the room as well which was a bonus. Every day it was immaculately cleaned. 3. Hotel Atmosphere - The hotel is really chilled. There is a schedule of activities per day, but generally it is very quiet and relaxed vibes. This suited us perfectly. The evenings got slightly more lively with music performances and dancers but this was usually only for a short period and ends before 10 / 11pm. 4. Staff - Staff were consistently great. They were friendly, happy and extremely welcoming. We would like to specifically call out these outstanding staff members for making our stay extra special - Anthony (Upepo Bar, always smiling, welcoming, attentive) - Liku (Chakula Chakula restaurant, incredibly friendly and kind) - Maryam (Upepo Bar, so kind, attentive and welcoming every day) - Jesca and Pascasia (Spa, incredible treatments and warm, friendly people) 5. Honeymoon - The hotel were very thoughtful around our honeymoon. There were quite a few other honeymoon couples in the hotel too. We had a special welcome in our room and were treated to a special dinner, these extra touches made our stay extremely special. Improvement points: We are nit-picking because the overall experience was fantastic but here are a few improvements: 1. Blocked Sun in main areas - The main pool only tends to get the sun in the morning, this is because of the large palm trees and landscaping. The landscaping adds so much aesthetically to the hotel and main areas but it does mean that after lunch the majority of the main pool is in shade. Also be aware that if you use your own private pool or swim up, it’s likely that this will also only get the sun for the first half of the day. We experienced this in our swim up and talked to other guests with a private pool who had a similar experience. 2. Sun Lounger access - The main upper pool is not massive, there are around 7 pairs of loungers, maybe because the hotel expects people will use their own pool more. There is not a policy around reserving the loungers and we noticed people were getting up early to put a towel down and then going to breakfast. We were caught out the first few days. 3. Waiting for food and drink - Be prepared to wait a while for your food and drink orders. The mantra of ‘Pole, Pole’ (or slowly, slowly) in Zanzibar is real and extends to service in the hotel. We waited an hour for one sandwich and consistently 45 minutes + for a food order if you are not using the buffet. If you plan this in and expect it then it is not an issue but something to be aware of. 4. Beach use - The hotel has two amazing beaches however they are very rarely used by guests. The sea itself has some fairly dangerous wildlife (e.g. urchins) and you are strongly advised to bring sea shoes to go in. The beach unfortunately has a lot of locals on trying to sell things to guests, the moment you step 10 metres on to the beach expect to be swarmed. Don’t expect to be lying on the sand and swimming in the sea here. For us personally we didn’t miss this at all, as our swim up and main pool were enough. 5. Gym - The hotel provides 2x 2kg dumbbells and a yoga mat as a substitute for not having a gym. We would usually be the people to use a hotel gym most days so this was a miss for us, but forced us to rest! A gym would be a huge bonus for this hotel.

We stayed for 7 nights in July after an eight day safari in mainland Tanzania. We were all inclusive in a swim up villa We arrived late due to flight problems but the welcome was excellent. A shortened check in process before being shown to our villa where some food had been set out for us. The villa was excellent with a se up pool shared with three others providing a 50m+ swim. The bed was very comfortable and surrounded by a mosquito net if required. Excellent shower and plenty of wardrobe space. Sit down space both inside and out. We only used the buffet restaurant which provided an excellent standard of good and a good choice. The all inclusive provided access to a good selection of beers wine and spirits. The main pools were good but with a fairly small number of sunbeds. Further beds available on the beach. We had two excellent massages in the spa (extra cost but not extortionate). The staff service was exceptional with everyone providing a friendly Jambo Jambo greeting and no task being a problem.

The hotel was incredible clean tidy and ascetically pleasing. Staff were friendly and welcoming. They couldn’t do enough for you. I would love to make them all but the list would be too long. The tuctuc to and from our room was the best fun. 🛺 a long walk after a few drinks We got upgraded from the swim up room (58)to the Dulux. Both were gorgeous in their own right but the swim up was definitely the better room. I wish we’d stuck with what we ordered, we had a surprise during the night. A bush baby in our room eating our snacks, sounds cute! But not after only 3 hrs sleep on a plane and in complete darkness not knowing what was in the room with you. Again I wish we had requested the room changed. Around 5am there is a guy singing, (I believe it’s morning prayer) A me problem not the hotel but I tried to sleep with the bed light on and noise cancelling head phones in. The pool area gets busy, as it has very limited beds. Both public pools are well looked after! Very beautiful view. Food… basic, it became very clearly quickly that you need to book the fukwe restaurant every night as the food there is much nicer than the Buffett. Which is very very limited and left out a long time. Location was incredible with a sea view and access to two beaches. Value- I can’t comment on as it was a package through trail finders who don’t itemise the bill. Atmosphere was really quiet and the bar was always empty. Apart from one night when management invited everyone to the bar for a cocktail and canopies. Everyone arrived waiting for something but that was all it was. I enjoyed how quiet it was, a great bit of RNR

We have just had the most amazing and relaxing stay at Matemwe Attitude! We had a sea front villa with stunning views of the Indian Ocean. The staff are absolutely amazing, friendly and polite, nothing is too much trouble. Big shout out to all the staff for making us so welcome, but especially Anthony at the Upepo bar and Lilian at the Chukula Chukula restaurant. If you're planning on a vacation in Zanzibar, you won't go far wrong by staying at the Matemwe Attitude!
