Kalithea Horizon Blu

The room was average with a lovely view. The food looked nice but was all uncovered and infested with flies. The staff at the restaurant really needed to go on a customer service course. There were two female staff who were pleasant and helpful. The restaurant and the safari bar were inundated with flies, crawling all over glasses, cutlery and tables. So unhygienic and dirty. There were no hand sanitisers. The pool areas were dirty and had plates and cups left for the flies to land all over. The pools were slimy and slippery with millions of flies being scooped out in the morning. We unfortunately got very poorly with a sickness and diarrhoea illness. Came home still poorly and had to have tests, hospital appointments and antibiotics back in the uk. Reported to Tui reps and seemed very unhelpful. Only good thing about the holiday was that we met some lovely people who also experienced the same horrible time. We will definitely not be returning!

The run up to our holiday was less than ideal and we nearly didn’t go. The reviews on here and the Facebook group and reports of sickness and poor hygiene really really put me off. The lack of assistance or acknowledgement from TUI regarding these concerns was absolutely disgusting. They continuously denied any reports of illness even though people were posting screenshots of their formal complaints. We were told we could not change hotel would lose 100% of the price of the holiday if we cancelled because the satisfaction survey showed good results. We were meeting friends who had gone out two days prior so decided to see what they thought. They had an issue with their rooms so I emailed the hotel asking for reassurance regarding the cleanliness, hygiene and our room type. I received no reply. However, on arrival at the hotel I have to say our room was beautiful. It was more of a suite than a family room and was spotlessly clean. This was a big relief. I still wiped everything down with clinell wipes in case but this didn’t feel necessary really. The air con was fab and the room was lovely and quiet. We all slept very well. At breakfast the next morning, the food, which was uncovered was swarming with flies which really put me off so I didn’t eat. Lunch was a little better and dinner was ok but the outdoor restaurant was so so crowded and I didn’t feel I could relax re cleanliness so for the whole week, I used serviettes to handle the utensils, cleaned down the table and high chair with my own cleaning solution and made sure we all sanitized our hands. We managed to avoid any illness but sadly the same could not be said of our friends who were with us on the trip which put a real dampener on the holiday. The hotel is very tired, it felt a bit like walking into the 80s. The keys are still metal with a key ring, the safe was usable the male night manager is basically a Greek Basil Fawlty and some of the receptionists would do extremely well at my GP surgery. The majority of staff were polite but this could not be said for all. The woman who makes the crepes in the indoor restaurant is rude and confrontational and was shouting at me as I walked away from her because I did not appreciate the way she was speaking to me in front of my young daughter. The pool at the front of the hotel by reception is by far the cleanest and most spacious but sadly does not have the views the other pools have. Flies are a big problem and while there were also the same flies in Rhodes town, it was frustrating that staff seemed completely unfazed by flies landing on the food in front of them. The food was ok. Some nights were better than others. The indoor restaurant is more of a canteen than a restaurant and has zero charm but is fly free. The outdoor restaurant is old fashioned but more atmospheric, however is very very busy and not overly clean or well staffed. There is a sewage smell at the resort but only when the wind is blowing a certain direction and it didn’t bother me too much. The views from the hotel are stunning and the beach is lovely. Sadly I think the hotel has had its day and requires either downgrading or some serious investment. We made the best of it we could with some brilliant company but I am very disappointed having paid nearly £4000 for this hotel when the run up was so stressful, I kept having to clean and sanitise everything and be very conscious of what myself and my children were eating (no fruit or salad) and getting shouted at by the pancake woman. Ah the most, the hotel is a 3 star and absolutely not a 4 star or a TUI platinum.

We had such high hopes for this hotel after reading so many great reviews, but unfortunately we were utterly disappointed. This hotel could be out of this world amazing. It has so much potential and the location is absolutely beautiful. The beach and views are fantastic, and the concept of the sea-view outdoor dining is amazing. Sadly, for us, this was completely ruined by the poor hygiene and severe fly problem. Cleanliness and hygiene were a major concern throughout our stay. The pools were visibly dirty and did not appear to be cleaned properly. There was a severe fly infestation, which seemed to be made worse by the lack of cleaning. Floors were sticky and there was significant dirt build-up around the pool tiles. Our little boy was covered in black dirt after being in the pool, so we chose to spend most of our time at the beach instead. Food hygiene was also concerning. Hot food was often served cold, while foods that should have been chilled did not appear sufficiently cold, and food was left sitting out for long periods. A lot of people seemed to become unwell during our stay. I appreciate there was reportedly a virus circulating on the island, so I cannot say that illness was definitely food-related, but given what we witnessed with the food, it was certainly a concern for us. The drinks were hit and miss. Fizzy drinks were often flat or had far too much or too little syrup. That said, the coffee and wine were of a particularly high standard for an all-inclusive, and the beer and spirits were good too. The beach was the standout part of our holiday and ultimately made our stay much more enjoyable. Following our concerns about the pool hygiene and the ants in our room, we were upgraded to blue bands, which included food and drinks at the beach snack bar. Without this, I honestly don’t think we would have enjoyed our holiday nearly as much. Reception and bar staff were generally very friendly, but unfortunately we found some of the restaurant staff rude. We also had an uncomfortable encounter with the restaurant manager, which left our daughter feeling on edge for much of the holiday. We were often made to feel like an inconvenience when trying to find a table, including being told where we could and couldn’t sit, which really affected our dining experience. Our rooms were on the ground floor and unfortunately we had a serious ant infestation, meaning we couldn’t properly use the terrace. One room had much better air conditioning than the other. In one room the bath plug didn’t work, and the fridges were essentially useless as they didn’t stay cold. They also contained fizzy drinks that were out of date and tasted awful. We had one beer and one bottle of water that weren’t replaced. I really feel TUI need to reconsider advertising this hotel as Platinum. In our experience, it simply did not meet the standard we would expect from a TUI Platinum property. The cleanliness, hygiene and service were not at the level we expected. This is also a huge complex, with around 750 rooms, and unfortunately the cleanliness issues didn’t appear to be isolated to one particular area. We noticed similar problems across different pools and restaurants. The location and beach are genuinely fantastic and, with proper investment in cleanliness, hygiene and service, this hotel could be exceptional. Sadly, based on our experience, we would not recommend staying here at present. For us, the hygiene issues were too significant to overlook.

We booked Kalithea Horizon Royal after carefully checking the Tripadvisor reviews before booking. It was advertised as a 4-star Platinum hotel with TUI and had a Tripadvisor rating of around 4.5, so we genuinely expected a high standard. Sadly, after spending 14 nights here, we have to say there is absolutely no way this hotel deserves a 4.5 Tripadvisor rating based on our experience. It certainly did not feel like a 4-star Platinum property. There were some positives. The Wi-Fi and air conditioning in our room were good, and our cleaning lady was absolutely lovely and did a great job. The location and views are also beautiful. Unfortunately, the negatives far outweighed the positives. Checkin was slow and we were given 2 metal keys one for the door and one for the safe! Not explained at the time we had to work it out when we got to the room!! The door had gaps at the side and the bottom and could easily have been opened so we made sure everything was put in the safe. The flies were absolutely horrendous. They were everywhere — around the restaurants, food, drinks and outside dining areas. Eating outside became a lottery as to whether a fly would land on your food before you could eat it. We eventually stopped eating outside and went indoors to Thalasso because it was so unpleasant. We were also extremely concerned by what we witnessed at the Mythos bar, where plastic cups appeared to be washed by hand and reused. For a hotel marketed as 4-star Platinum, this was extremely concerning. Also food ran out most days at 2pm with only ice cream classed as “food” The pools also appeared dirty and poorly maintained, adding to our concerns about the overall hygiene standards.We did n’t see any pool cleaning in 14 days and a scum line appearing at the main pools , we gave the jacuzzis a miss!!! Then there was the illness. All three of us suffered from sickness and diarrhoea during the holiday, and my husband was ill for 10 of our 14 days. He is still ill now on our return to the UK as am I!! We heard on the last day that reception are now warning of a “bug” going round The food was another major disappointment. The buffet on arrival was very poor, and we were told there were no all-inclusive drinks after 12pm. Not exactly ideal when you arrive after 12pm The minibar wasn’t replenished properly either — not even water was provided. We had to get our own and bring it back to the room. Water in the hotel restaurant fridges was always warm!! We also had a bad experience at the main bar with a Calypso Coffee that summed up the lack of attention We ordered the coffee one evening and it arrived cold. We sent it back and were given replacements — which was also cold. We returned those too and decided to have something else instead. We mentioned this to the manager at reception, expecting at least some acknowledgement or concern. Instead, his response was essentially “tell them.” I explained that I already had, at which point he simply shrugged and marched off in the opposite direction! And that brings me to another point: being all-inclusive does not mean you should receive lower standards. We have paid for the holiday, just in a different way. If a drink costs €8, whether I’m paying €8 at the bar or it is included in my all-inclusive package, I expect the same drink, the same service and the same standards. We were increasingly uncomfortable eating at the hotel with the flies , I took myself and my child out to eat, my husband was too weak to go out , we brought food back for him.. Having paid for a 14-night all-inclusive holiday and then having to go elsewhere for food defeats the entire point of booking all-inclusive. If it wasn't cooked in front if us we didn’t eat it!! We would not return and cannot recommend this hotel.

I booked this hotel in Jan after reading the amazing reviews and o always look for a hotel that has guests that revisit year after year. On the run up to the holiday I noticed the bad reviews and mostly took them with a pinch of salt but I have to admit it did concern me slightly. On arrival in the early hours we were checked in by the rudest man, he was horrible. Didn’t make us feel welcome and provided zero information, it was a really awkward start to the holiday. We were taken to our room by golf cart which we had to wait ages for but the man who took us was lovely. On arrival to the room there were rubbish bags left just outside our door and the whole landing was swarming with ants and they had travelled under our door and were all over the inside of the room. Terrible start but I hoped it would be better in the morning… Cons - flies were HORRENDOUS. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s normal, this was far from normal. There were swarms of them everywhere, all over you, your food, your drinks. There’s a reason for it, the place is FILTHY - the floors around the pools were sticky with spilt drinks and they were never cleaned, tables were the same - plates were left on tables not collected attracting them - at breakfast glasses were still left out with drinks in from the night before and they were swarming around them - we were sick of the flies so tried the inside buffet and as we were leaving a rat crossed our path at the entrance and ran into the trees. Another sign this place is dirty. - didn’t see one person cleaning anywhere other than the rooms around the hotel in the day time. I found this bizarre, everywhere I have been have cleaners around the hotel always cleaning something - the glass was dirty our whole stay and hadn’t been cleaned - the pools had scum round them because they were dirty - food was repetitive but ok, nothing special. I was scared of eating due to the flies cross contamination - some staff were so rude. There was a young girl in the main buffet (had lots of eye makeup up, didn’t catch her name) and every time she picked your plates up to take them away she pulled her face like it was disgusting and she didn’t want to touch them - the place is very out dated and needs some serious cash spending on it to bring it up to date - the way they do things is also very old fashioned and reminded me of the 80s - wristbands… what is the blue and yellow thing all about, felt very discriminatory and almost racist. Basically if you are German you get beach beds and beach bar included and if you are any other nationality you have to pay. This is a very discriminatory approach and they should look at this. Cons - room clean although mini bar wasn’t topped up once, I had to ask for water. I was fed up of going and buying it. - location is beautiful and the snoring is one of the best spots I’ve seen - main bad staff were exceptional - delphine snack bar was very good and service was quick and friendly - lifeguard at delphine was lovely and really helpful - receptionist on check out was lovely and the totally opposite of the man at check in - I defo got my steps in, this place is huge. Too big maybe We spent 5 days away from the hotel because of everything you have seen in this review and we spent a lot on eating out and doing other things so we didn’t have to spend our time here so I don’t feel like this place is value for money at all. 2 out of the 3 of us caught the bug going round and I believe although this isn’t the hotels fault they did zero to try and stop the spread. Hygiene here is a serious concern. I won’t mention Tui here because we will be here all day but they are on a cover up with this place and how they have communicated with customers. It’s a shame, this place could be really good but it needs a serious overhaul haul. I would not recommend to anyone spending their hard earned cash.
