I'm British-Mauritian with obviously a brown skin complexion . However, I never knew that my own country would betray me in such a way this hotel did. For starters, let us address the elephant in the room or around the whole hotel... The smell was horrid on the 2 days I had to survive there, YES survive , I assume the septic tank is broken and even then it is a wild guess because no staff or anyone really seemed to address that disgusting smell. When we first checked into the hotel we were told the parking was full and were told to park outside the hotel. This is some mumbo jumbo of a level I never saw as the whole point of a hotel is to ensure security. When I asked the security guard why on earth such a thing can exist he said it was a common occurrence. We own an electric car and since Le Morne is a very isolated place and far from my home we hoped that there were electric chargers readily available for us to use. Now the good news was that there was... However they were taken up by non-electric vehicles???? Finally, after that parking fiasco and exasperation that we will face the possibility of having to find a super charger on the way home. Lo and behold we entered a hotel with a queue that took us at least 1h40mins to get to our rooms. Now in all the other hotels I visited (Ravenala altitude and Zilwa) we were usually guided to our rooms with our baggage brought to our rooms. Not only did we have to guess where our rooms were, but we also had to carry our luggages up the stairs in an already exhausted state. We went downstairs to have some snacks and drinks to start the afternoon but already we could see the long queues for anything to eat. Food disposal was a huge issue since there wasn't any system in place leftovers such as plates , food and others could be seen everywhere attracting flies and rodents even in the middle of the night where I would see a dog and cat just casually roaming around the hallway of my room which was on the 1st/2nd floor. While leaving food around the hotel is questionable it really becomes a problem as it could cause harm to the beach and the ecosystem around it. Additionally the lack of lifts is also a huge issue as I could see a lot of families bringing their parents or grandparents on wheelchairs. The same logic could be even applied to parents transporting their kids on buggies. Now we get to the sports bar. The service was nice and the servers were friendly. The issues I had was the fact that there is only 1 billiard table clearly begging for a cleanup and with a broken cue stick. Since it was the only attraction some people would hog the table from 4pm to 3 am which shows either more tables should be added or a system must be put into place. The pool is probably a bio-hazard at this point as I went for a late swim and honestly the amount of snot, Phlegm & tic tac I saw while swimming I knew this was basically a breeding pool for an illness and my luck didn't disappointed me as I fell sick the day after I left the hotel. The food served at the all you can eat buffet was very non-asian friendly as a Telugu (an ethnic group in hinduism ) I was concerned how some of the foods such as pork or beef were placed so close to the chicken, duck or even vegetarian food and people cross contaminating said food which is a clear violation of my faith that I follow within. Also the lack of chicken or lamb made it hard to choose food around the buffet and sometimes it would take a good 15 minute search just to put something appetising on our plate (the lack of proper labelling also didn't help as sometimes I could see a clear pink juice labelled as orange juice for crying out loud). Then we have the Sega auditorium which is ironic by name as I didn't hear a single Sega song but I gave it the benefit of doubt as sometimes there are different themes. However, My room was placed near the said Sega location meaning I couldn't relax a single bit till It was midnight. The whole reservation for the restaurants such as the steak house should not be expected to be booked in a month in advance. If it was the main attraction I would argue otherwise but most of the best steaks in Mauritius are walked in or at most 1 day in advance which is a big stretch in our culture. Finally, the cherry on top is the subtle racism towards the Mauritian folk , at first I thought it was probably me being on an off day where staff were just burnt out which I would totally understand but while reading the reviews and my own experience I can agree there is a bias towards Mauritians. Since I can speak good English I would notice that sometimes I would get better service just by speaking with a British accent and the immediate eye roll if I started speaking Kreole. This was apparent when I was packing the room locked us out at 11am instead of 12 which again I still gave benefit of doubt (as you can see I really bit my tongue) so we were a bit late (10 mins to be precise ) and we were just waiting for my dad to get the car to the front of the hotel to go home when I was met with a cleaner threatening me to kick me out of the hotel and calling security because apparently I was "hogging" the hotel. This was the last straw for me to write this review, at this point I would argue that the whole experience could be due to racism which I hope it wasn't but these "coincidences" tend to make me doubt myself. While I do have pictures of the things I mentioned, posting them would serve nothing as at best I would probably get a corporate reply saying we were sorry and we will try to do a better gimmick they already have on auto-reply. If you're European and visiting this hotel it would probably be splendid but as a Mauritian speaking to my fellow Mauritians trust me there's hell and then there's this. The one star is the lone star because anything good about the hotel was outside of it as I felt back on my home turf after visiting another planet hence the title.
Guillaume, manish, davish at the bar served us well. One disappointment, it was the birthday of my husband on 12th april. I even mentioned in the form I was given to fill. No complimentary cake was provided to us. We enquired and we were told we have to pay. We already paid around 20k for our stay and the hotel is that poor that they cannot give a complimentary cake for the birthday of my husband. I am asking this question to the manager. Note that it's the 3rd time we came to the hotel, repeated customers. Our room number was 1023. Booking was done under Eranand Buhooa.
I and my mom have truly been impressed by the outstanding service of the hotel staff at RIU Turquoise. During our 10 day stay, we also discovered that the hotel has several facilities, which are both fun and luxurious. If I were to name some of those who made our holiday in Mauritius particularly memorable, I would thank Anita for making our hotel room spotless everyday; and Liosah for being the kindest waitress in the main restaurant; Sahil, from the main reception desk, for saving my holiday, when I was sick and needed medicine; and last but not least Kethline from the Bazaar & Co, who has been helpful and friendly every time I visited their shop. In summary it has been a dream come true for me to stay at RIU Hotel during my holiday in Mauritius, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to everyone on my way. Until next time, I can't wait to visit RIU Turqouise again.
We recently stayed at the hotel and had a generally pleasant experience, although there were a few aspects that could be improved. The check-in process was quite lengthy, taking over 45 minutes despite having completed the online check-in in advance. While we understand that check-in may take some time given the number of guests arriving at the same time, we did not expect it to take that long, which was quite frustrating upon arrival. Additionally, there was no staff available to guide us to our room. We had to ask several times for directions, and unfortunately, we were given different instructions each time, which resulted in us walking around unnecessarily and wasting time and energy. We were also not informed that we needed to download the Guest App to access the daily program and make reservations, which caused some inconvenience. It would have been helpful if this had been communicated in advance. Moreover, it would be wonderful if the Guest App were fully compatible with Huawei phones. Although we were able to download the app, we could not make proper use of it, which resulted in us missing out on daily programs, activities, and restaurant reservations. That said, the personnel were very nice, welcoming, and helpful throughout our stay, which we truly appreciated. The food was excellent, and both the service and entertainment were amazing, making our overall experience enjoyable. One point to note is regarding the “sea view” room. While we did have a partial view of the sea, it was not a full sea view as expected, as part of the view included buildings. In summary, while there are some areas that could be improved, particularly the check-in process, communication, and app accessibility, the hospitality, food, and entertainment made our stay worthwhile.
Overall was amazing, was activities to suit everyone of any age. Staff are very kind and happy to help you if needed, always checking on me if I was ok and having fun, I travelled solo but I never felt alone. I had time to relax if I wanted to or take part in activities or just sit with a drink and talk with staff everyone was very interactive making sure I was having a good time. I recommend this hotel in Mauritius the vibe is vibrant and with smiles all around. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you to all the staff for a great holiday you all contributed to my happy moments in the hotel, the bartender in the lagoon bar his name is Ribash, he makes the best cocktails, thank you.
