I booked Travelodge Harbourfront as my first hotel for my first-ever trip to Singapore. Since I was arriving late at around 1:00 AM, I wanted to avoid any issues, so I made sure to email the hotel in advance to inform them of my late arrival and to request that my reservation not be cancelled. When I arrived at the hotel, I was informed by the receptionist that I had been “upgraded” because all the rooms under my original booking had already been occupied. At the time, I thought it was a nice gesture and did not think much of it. However, the next morning, I realized that the “upgrade” meant I had to change rooms by 12:00 PM. Since I had already planned my entire day, I had to rush back to the hotel around noon to check out of the upgraded room and, as the evening receptionist explained, “downgrade” to my original room. When I returned to the hotel to change rooms, I was then informed that the check-in time for the new room was 3:00 PM. At that point, I honestly felt like I had lost most of my Day 1 in Singapore. I explained to the receptionist that this was exactly the kind of situation I had tried to avoid by emailing the hotel ahead of time. If I had known that being “upgraded” would mean having to check out, wait several hours, and then check in again the following day, I would have seriously considered choosing another hotel. I begged and explained my situation because this was my first time in Singapore, and I had carefully planned my itinerary so that I could make the most of my limited time. Thankfully, I met Shudviah (I hope I got her name right). I truly appreciate her help. She did not make me wait until 3:00 PM. Instead, she found a way to arrange a room for me. At that point, whether it was an upgrade or downgrade no longer mattered to me. What mattered was that she gave me back my time — and, in a way, she gave me back my day. That meant a lot because every hour is precious when you're traveling, especially on your first visit to a new country. When I returned to my room around 8:00 PM, I was also pleasantly surprised to find some snacks waiting for me. I checked out early the next morning and left my bags at the baggage area. I was hoping to see Shudviah again so I could personally thank her, but unfortunately, I didn't get the chance. I just hope the hotel can consider that while an upgrade may sound like a great gesture, it may not always be the best experience for a traveler if it requires them to check out and check in again the next day. For someone with a carefully planned itinerary, the time lost can be more valuable than the upgrade itself. Despite the stressful start, I’m glad that my trip ultimately turned out well. And a big thank you to Shudviah for going the extra mile and making sure I could continue enjoying my first trip to Singapore. Her help truly made a difference.
The location is very convenient, very close to Vivocity Mall and not far from the Harboufront MRT station, and it’s also very easy to navigate around the area! Staff are very helpful and very thoughtful, always doing their best to make the stay more enjoyable!
