We stayed here for seven nights mid-September with a Secret Escapes package - a superior room with balcony and a fabulous view of the Bay of Kvarner. Pros: Everything about the hotel is luxurious. It' s an historic building and was the first hotel to be built in Opatija (1884 ) Groups of tourists stop outside with their tour guide. We could wave to them from our balcony! We had an excellent room and had no complaints about it. The staff are friendly and courteous at all times and cannot do enough for you. All speak English well. The array of choices at breakfast has to be seen to be believed. You name it, it. was there - from seafood and cold meat platters, to salmon and eggs and bacon. There is even an a la carte breakfast menu in addition. The pool is on the small side and I could imagine it gets a bit crowded peak season. It was hardly used when we were there. Much better is the concrete terrace with sun loungers which runs adjacent to the sea, which is really warm I should add that this is the only hotel we have ever stayed in which enforces its own policy about leaving towels or personal possessions on on sun loungers to "reserve" them. Try to do this and they will be removed to a storage point where you can embarrassingly claim them later. You also get handed a warning card! Cons: Not many. We had one meal from the hotel restaurant when we arrived. Oddly, it was mediocre, in sharp contrast to the breakfasts. The roast potatoes we had with our chicken tasted as though they had been cooked the day before and microwaved. Noise alert. thought it was odd when I opened my bedside drawer and discovered two earplugs. Come Friday and Saturday night I found out why they were there. At 11pm on Friday night it started -- the incessant thump, thump, thump of techno dance music which continued without a break until 4am the next morning on both nights. It drove us nuts and we had two nights with little sleep.Obviously out of the hotel's control. The culprit, I discovered thanks to Mr Google, is a nearby nightspot called the Drago Club. I won't say it spoiled our holiday but it certainly detracted from it. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that our room faced the bay and sound carries over the sea

Hotel Kvarner, Opatija: the oldest hotel on the Adriatic, and still one of the best I've stayed in some top properties, and this is just about the most beautiful hotel I've ever checked into. It recently went through a renovation and it shows everywhere. The room itself: a huge balcony with an overhang, so you get shade when you want it. French doors opening onto it from the bedroom, and a second set opening from the bathroom. You look out and see the Adriatic glistening and rippling in front of you. One of the most spectacular views I've had anywhere. Which brings me to the thing I never expected to write. I never thought a toilet needed a view. You get one here. You're sitting on the throne looking out over the balcony at that water, and it's just spectacular. You feel like you're on top of the world. We were on the third floor and it was outstanding. Pay for the sea view. It's worth every euro. The hotel opened in 1884 as the first grand hotel on the eastern Adriatic, originally a spa retreat for the Habsburgs, and that Austro-Hungarian DNA is everywhere, in the architecture inside the hotel and throughout the town. It's so different from what you usually see on this coast. Breakfast is excellent, with just about anything you could want. Fair warning: the terrace pigeons are extremely aggressive. Honestly, it keeps the entertainment level high. The beach is the classic Adriatic stone setup, so you go in by ladders and steps. But just to the side there's a sandy-bottomed section, where you can stand chest-deep and play ball games without treading water the whole time. People run up and down doing aerobics in it. Great feature. The spa is included, which is a real value. Two Finnish saunas and a Turkish steam room, plus beautiful shower facilities stocked with Lanvin shampoo and body wash. We barely used the shower in our own room, beautiful as it is, because the routine became beach, then sauna, then those showers. Location is ideal. You're in the center of everything, which matters here because some of the Opatija hotels are a bit remote. Right across the street is Roko, one of the best restaurants in town, and we happily went back day after day. I had a fabulous time and I'm definitely going back.

Very beautiful, classic k&k hotel in Opatija. The service is good, the parking fee of EUR 35 per day was a bit steep but they do take your car and park it for you which is very nice. The rooms are spacious, all amenities you could want are provided. Staff is also very friendly and they are happy to help you with any questions you have. Private beach and pool are quite luxurious, the place never feels packed with people which was ideal.
