Having just spent a week at Albatros Makadi Bay, I’d rate it as a 4-star hotel with the potential to be 5-star, rather than a true 5-star resort as advertised. There’s plenty to like, and we had an enjoyable holiday overall, but several areas fell short of the standard I’d expect from a hotel of this rating. The positives Cleanliness: Excellent throughout. Staff are constantly cleaning the resort, and it really shows. Pools and sunbeds: There are plenty of pool options and no shortage of sunbeds, so there is no need for an early-morning rush. The private pools outside each accommodation block are also a nice touch and are often quiet. House reef and beach: The house reef is incredible, with a huge variety of fish to see. Bring your snorkels! The private beach is okay, with beds generally available towards the far end. However, the sea is extremely shallow for 100–200 metres before you reach the reef. Water shoes are essential. Food: The food is generally nice and of good quality, with fresh cooking stations across the resort. The beach food court also has plenty of lunch options. Lagoon: A lovely addition to the resort, often providing a peaceful spot away from the busier areas, despite the nearby building work around the currently closed ship bar. Waterpark: A great selection of slides for all ages. The only frustration is that it closes for a couple of hours over lunchtime, which seems unnecessary. Rooms: Our Deluxe Family Room was a good size, with a double bed, two twin beds and plenty of storage. Entertainment and facilities: The children’s entertainment team work tirelessly, with plenty of activities throughout the day. The VR room is also excellent, with lots of good machines, although one or two additional staff members would help reduce waiting times. The negatives Drinks: A major letdown for a 5-star resort. Cocktail choices are limited and poorly or inconsistently made. The beer is just about acceptable, while the only wine options are house white, rosé and red, all of which were poor. On one evening, the red wine was even served straight from a fridge. I’d expect a lot better quality and more variety from a hotel claiming to be 5 star. Restaurants and dining experience: Although the food is generally good, all six restaurants are buffet-style and spread across three floors, yet feel almost identical. Even the steak restaurant is a buffet. They have a canteen-like atmosphere, with echoing rooms, basic tables, plastic chairs and often paper napkins. Some à la carte options in more attractive settings would make a huge difference and help justify the 5-star rating. Service: Generally poor, particularly in the restaurants. Tables were often not reset, plates weren’t cleared between courses, and drinks orders were infrequent, leaving us to get our own. There were exceptions, notably the lifeguard by the small pool near our room and the waiter by the lagoon, both of whom were excellent. Smoking: As non-smokers, we found smoking everywhere quite invasive, including around the pools and in restaurants. We were regularly subjected to second-hand smoke, which was particularly unpleasant when trying to enjoy a meal. Ice cream: Surprisingly limited, available mainly at the out-of-the-way waterpark or occasionally from a temporary evening setup. For a family resort, it should be available in more locations. Resort appearance: The resort looks reasonable overall, but the large concrete area near the stage lacks greenery, trees and soft furnishings, giving it a somewhat unfinished, concrete-jungle feel. Some additional landscaping would make a big difference. Adult entertainment: Disappointing, with generally low-quality shows that are largely aimed at younger children. There isn’t much to cater for adults or families with older children. Wi-Fi: Available throughout the resort, but regularly drops out and is slow, making it unreliable. Late checkout: We were initially quoted €120 for a late-checkout room, which increased to €124 on the day of checkout. This was particularly disappointing given previous guests had reported paying €55–€75, with one even reporting being given a room free of charge when they asked on the day. Our quoted price was almost double what some other guests had paid. There should be a standard, flat rate for late checkout rather than such significant inconsistencies in pricing. Overall We had a nice week away, and the hotel has some genuine highlights, particularly the cleanliness, pools, house reef and waterpark. The food itself is generally good, but the repetitive buffet format, lack of restaurant atmosphere, disappointing drinks and inconsistent service stop the resort feeling truly 5-star. It isn’t a bad hotel by any means, but it feels more like a 4-star resort with potential. With better restaurant variety, some à la carte dining, improved service and more attention to the finer details, it could be excellent.

We just got back from ten nights at the Albatros Makadi and thought I'd share my experience for anyone due to arrive. Two adults and two teens aged 14 and 15. 1. The hotel is well maintained and the rooms are very spacious with lovely balconies. 2. The staff are extremely kind and friendly...nothing was too much trouble. 3. The three main pools are heated. The rest are not and feel very cold in October. There are lifeguards at every pool. 4. The water park closes for a couple of hours over lunch. There are so many staff working here it doesn't seem necessary. 5. The restaurants are good but the food is quite samey. My daughter got sickness/diarrhoea but I think that is common for any hotel in Egypt. Bring immodium. 6. You can only get ice cream from the snack bar in the waterpark and there are only four basic flavours in tubs. Underwhelming and should be available elsewhere. They advertise it is available in the Alfredo restaurant but I asked and was told no. 7. The gym closes at 7pm. 8. The walk along the jetty to the reef takes 5-10 minutes but is incredible. We saw so much, including a turtle. 9. The evening entertainment is terrible. 10. The drinks are fairly limited. No prosecco/cava, limited spirits and only two cocktails available unless you go to the galaxy bar. 11. The constant touts coming round trying to sell you trips etc is very irritating. You can ask for a red flag to tie around your parasol so they leave you in peace. We booked quad biking and diving via trip advisor - it's MUCH cheaper. Overall we had a nice break but wasn't blown away by the hotel. The weather was lovely and there was always a nice breeze to stop you getting too hot which was why we chose Egypt for an October holiday. The best thing about this place is the Red Sea, which is fantastic and seems to be well looked after. Hurghada itself is a dump and we won't be returning.
