At first, it was a normal holiday stay. We were quite happy with the Barcelo. Its situation is not the best if you want to walk around because it is in Business Bay. There a few grocery shops and restaurants around but it’s not so easy to have access to them because of the way the road network is built. Not a lot of pedestrian crossings.So apart from the walk along the central canal just behind the hotel, you have to take a taxi. For example, The Burj Khalifa (and Dubaï downtown) is only just 1,800km distant from the hotel but it is hardly possible to walk up there. However, if you are lucky to have a room facing the back of the building, you have a nice view over a little greenery court and the room is quiet. We ate quite a few times in the restaurant : the food was good though not very typically oriental. Breakfast was also good, offering a good choice of quality food. The swimming pool is a plus : it is 35 m long though a bit narrow. Plenty of seating around considering no-one goes there just to stay at the hotel all day long. The room is a bit small but that’s enough. The bedding is very comfortable. However, in the bathroom, there isn’t enough space around the sink for your toiletries and no cupboard or shelf. The staff, whether it be at the reception, bar service, restaurant, information desk, valet or room cleaning service are ALL very nice, polite, courteous and helpful. Always a smile on their faces ! We had already spent 5 nights in the Barcelo when the war started. A few days later, our flight was cancelled. So we had to extend our stay for another two nights. We were desperately waiting for TUI to send a voucher to the reception, extending our stay for free. It was long to come.The reception was very comprehensive and extended our check out time until 3.30. Still no voucher. The hotel suggested we pay for the night and gave us a discount of 40 %. When they had received the voucher, they refunded us what we had paid. In the end we were just very few customers remaining in the hotel. Most had departed and no new customer was coming because of the conflict. In spite of that the service remained the same and, for example, the choice for breakfast was just as varied. We are very sorry for what the hotel is experiencing because of that war. We are very sorry for all those workers who find themselves without a job. We do hope things will come back to normal as soon as possible. In conclusion, the Barcelo is a great place to stay at !
