Domes of Elounda, Autograph Collection

Firstly, Domes is a large, quite hilly, resort requiring use of the buggies to get around the different zones. This took us a while to get used to. It has quite an international feel to the resort rather than a distinctive Greek ambience. The private beach with its bar and restaurant were brilliant. The staff at Domes are exemplary and always keen to help.. The accommodation is modern and generous. The main restaurant, Tholos, is good with always lots of choice. Wine can get expensive quickly though. There is an Italian restaurant which is good, and a Greek Michelin chef restaurant we didn’t eat at, which looked classy but pricey. We like visiting local villages - Plaka is a lovely place with a good choice of tavernas, but access is only by taxi (€10), as road is not pedestrian friendly. Pity. Lots of young children <5 age when we visited in June - not a problem for us. All in all a positive experience.

Beautiful location overlooking Spinalonga. Our room was amazing although not sure why we needed 2 baths and 3 showers lol. The buffet food was ok but was always like warm. The best restaurant was definitely Antonio’s even though we had to put money towards it. The guys driving the buggies were very friendly as were housekeeping and reception people. Beautiful hotel set over a huge area so thank goodness for the buggies.

This isn't our first time at Domes, and we continue to enjoy our visits. But I'd like to draw attention to the chef at Tolos. Does he taste the food he prepares? He takes quality ingredients and simply ruins them. Examples: fried meat and fish are completely dry, octopus with avocado mousse is so sour it's inedible, and the same goes for shrimp. This chef is a disgrace and a disaster. The waiters also don't do their job. Plates are cleared very rarely. The tables are small, and if there are four of you, you'll be surrounded by dirty dishes.

Our first visit to Crete. We could not have chosen a better location. We stayed in a family suite, sea view and own pool. An perfect place to relax.
