First day and what a terrible experience already. I am not one to leave a negative review ever but feel I need to. I am absolutely devastated to say the least. I stayed at this hotel many years ago with my daughter and have travelled back to this hotel with my partner as I had a great stay all those years ago and was hopeful it would be the same again. On check in we were immediately asked to pay a further €140 if we wanted to upgrade to a better room. We had already booked a room we were happy with - standard room with balcony so didn’t feel the need and declined. We paid the tourist fee and headed to our room which turned out to be what I can only describe as a builders basement room. No balcony and a dirty sink in the corner of the room. We headed back to reception and the receptionist laughed and said we needed to pay €140 for a better room and he wanted this in cash. We refused to do this in cash as we were obviously unhappy and wanted to make a complaint and hopeful to claim any extra back. We booked via loveholidays who agreed this was terrible and tried to contact the hotel direct to resolve or move us to another hotel but the hotel would not answer their calls for over an hour. Eventually it was agreed we could have another room which is also awful but slightly better than the basement, without charge, but again has no balcony and is dirty and dark with no facilities which we had booked. We feel we have been left no option as it is now very late in the evening to be finding another hotel. The receptionist and manager clearly found this all very amusing and said I had obviously not read any reviews about this hotel. This is such a shame as you look forward to your holidays for such a long time, to then be greeted with this as well as terrible customer service - laughing in our faces and just asking for money. This leaves a lasting affect as the bar staff have been friendly but the beginning of this holiday has started so terribly it makes you want to keep any money we would have been paying them in tips each day, to go out every day and stay away from the hotel entirely instead which is what we will be doing. I am hopeful I’ll be able to get compensation as this is not a holiday, and is not anything I would ever book. Definitely not a 4 star hotel.
Heronissos Hotel delivers warmth and comfort in equal measure. The staff, the food, the sunshine all perfect. Exactly what we came to Crete for.
Unwind, eat well, soak up the Cretan sun and let the staff do the rest. Absolute bliss. Already counting down to next year.
Nice experience, nice food, nice staff. Would recommend.
We stayed here in June 2026. The positives are limited: the location is excellent and the staff were friendly. Unfortunately, that's where the good points end. What they don't make clear when booking is that the standard rooms are not actually located in the hotel itself, but in nearby apartment blocks. I find this completely misleading. If you book a hotel, you naturally expect to be staying in the hotel. This also means that the hotel's facilities are heavily oversubscribed. Getting a sunbed around the pool is virtually impossible unless you're up extremely early, and queues to enter the restaurant at peak times are common. The hotel simply seems to be trying to accommodate too many guests for the facilities available. We paid extra to upgrade to a superior room, but it was average at best. The bathroom was one of the smallest I've ever experienced in a hotel, storage space was severely lacking, and we ended up living out of our suitcases for the entire week. The balcony was also tiny – just about large enough for two people to stand on comfortably. The food wasn't terrible, but the choice was extremely limited. Most days consisted of some variation of pork or chicken, along with spaghetti bolognese and the occasional fish dish. There is an open cooking grill area that appears to be rarely, if ever, used, which is a missed opportunity to add some variety to the dining experience. Families with young children or fussy eaters would struggle, as the selection becomes repetitive very quickly. In my opinion, this is not a 4-star hotel. I've stayed in 3-star hotels that offered a much better overall experience and had better facilities. Sadly, I won't be returning, and I wouldn't choose to stay here again.
