The Island Hotel

Busted this hotel for a couples holiday having booked as a 5 star hotel and first impressions were very good.. however this is not 5 star. The pool area is excellent but needs better cleaning. There were broken umbrellas when we were there the day beds need a deep clean and the pool has a green scum around it. Breakfast was very good with a wide variety of choice and although the rooms were cleaned daily this wasn’t to a 5 star standard as the sink had tooth paste stains left for us to clean ourselves.. the rooms otherwise were good. The pool bar area was of a good standard and the staff were great here.. overall a pleasant hotel but definately not 5 star..

I would just like to start by saying The Island Hotel is not a 5*, it’s more like a 3*. On arrival for our 2 week holiday around midnight the first words out of the man on reception was that will be €210 euros for tourist tax. We were then taken to our room which was down as a garden view with terrace. The room was average with limited sockets and limited top ups with tea , coffee and sugar , I went down to reception for an iron. When we looked out towards our terrace view we were greeted with a 3ft wall with no privacy and an elevated embankment full of 20ft tree in front and no sunlight all day. Very disappointing.As a plus the shower was powerful and the cleaners were there everyday with clean towels. Our friends views just looked a dead palm leaf’s and were moved within two days. The food choice was reasonable but only lukewarm for breakfast and dinner. There were no drinks available for dinner so either bring some water which is provided everyday or pay extra. To order a bottle of water for dinner was €8. The waiter service was great they work very hard. All the pools are freezing and be up around 8ish to get a sunbed. The smoothies are worth a try but everything just seemed expensive for drinks. Everything seemed overpriced. I’ve definitely been in better 5* hotels there was nothing outstanding. The gym is average with limited free weights and cardio machines. I highly recommend the 4x4 safari and ask for Costa. He was very knowledgeable and very funny. The goats coming down the mountain to greet us and eat out of our hands was a once in a life time experience. The food was absolutely delicious at the end of our day and the dancing made for a wonderful end . Highly recommended. The Aqua water park was good fun for a day out. Overall very disappointing hotel to which I will never return.

Positives: Some staff are very kind, lots of pools (all unusable in October of course; the sea itself is warmer), close to beach, lots of amenities in local area, nice lunch menu, decent sized room with modern TV, room made up daily (to an extent), air con worked well, quiet, adults only. Negatives: some staff were inattentive, run down property & equipment (fridge, furniture, paint and decor, loungers) , resident tour seller hides charges, poor breakfast and coffee, indoor spa has a cold pool, cleaners soak your room's padded loungers making them gross or too cold to use, on site shop no longer sells essentials, room floor was not mopped at all during stay, layout is not great for elderly or infirm especially in wetter weather.

Lovely hotel with very nice rooms. Breakfast disappointing as in very samey, nothing unique. The bar is non atmospheric and the barman extremely unfriendly. He put all the lights off at midnight saying that we had lights over there, they were about 20 yards away. We were in darkness. Lots of nice tavernas just outside the grounds, great for eats and drinks. So glad we came bed and breakfast only. Lovely pools with plenty of beds to enjoy.

This is a lovely hotel in great location,but and it's a big but,the food is appalling,the food is cold,cheap and they even have a microwave to heat it up. Staff are generally very helpful,but got told off for taking a coffee from the restaurant to drink outside,they are a little touchy about you not buying their stuff. We ate out because it was so bad,all the little tavernas were great and cheap and good quality. Travel by bus is great,and easy,but bus stop is 1 mileish on main road. All in all nice hotel rubbish food. Not 5* We were there during the floods so weather was crap too.
