Hotel Gran Rey

We visited in April and didn't realise that the 'season' had ended, which we found strange for the Canaries. However, we had a fantastic holiday, the hotel is in a great location, with the sea in the front and mountains at the back, both lovely views. The rooms are spotlessly clean with plentiful hot water and a powerful shower. The rooftop bar is very reasonably priced and very pleasant. The pool is warm, and it's great to be able to see and hear the sea. You can request a kettle from the bar. The sea swimming is not easily accessible but the beach by the port is fine, as is Charco del Conde at high tide. However, La Gomera is not commercialised like some of the islands, and that is its charm, very quiet and laid back. We were here for 2 weeks and hired a car to walk in the National Park. The walks in the National Park are well signposted and easy to follow. Walk 16 was a particular favourite. We had a pleasant stay in the hotel. The highlights were the roof top bar where you have breakfast (a good selection of hot and cold options including pastries, cold meats, cheese, fruit, cereal, fresh orange juice, an omelette bar, cooked breakfast), you could eat lunch (but we didn’t), or have a drink watching the sunset. The food in the evening was ok, nothing to blow you away but there was always something we could choose. Lovely location, pretty chilled out, spotlessly clean and friendly staff.

We have just got back from our second visit to this lovely little hotel. The situation is perfect, within walking distance of numerous restaurants. The hotel is spotlessly clean, the staff efficient & friendly & the breakfast excellent. We will return again soon!

A very good 3 star hotel . Clean and good breakfasts . Be warned some rooms on floor 2 prone to early morning noise from tables being moved in restaurant on top floor. Also double be seems to mean 2 singles pushed together !

Excellent stay. The hotel (and the area in general) is quiet. The hotel seems to cater mainly for German speaking hikers, but there was enough English spoken for us to manage easily. We had a room at the back looking out over the gardens and towards the mountains. It's quite dark in the rooms, but bright enough sitting on the balcony. When it was very hot it was nice to be able to escape the sun! The room was clean, the bed (two singles pushed together) was one of the most comfortable I have stayed in on holiday. There was a fridge with 2 small bottles of water. There was a safe but I believe there was a charge to use this (we didn't need to use it). The bathroom was small but adequate, the bath was very small. There was plentiful hot water. The hotel provided a plate of mixed salads for late arrivals. Breakfasts were upstairs on the 3rd floor, a bright room, with seating inside and out. Dinner for residents was on the lower ground floor, no windows but brightly lit. The food was buffet style, varied and plentiful, and very good. Breakfast had cereals, breads, pastries, dried and fresh fruit, yoghurt, porridge, cheese, cold meats, and a hot buffet, and eggs / crepes cooked to order. There was also freshly squeezed orange juice (a squeezing machine next to the hot drinks dispenser). Dinner buffet had lots of salads, cheese, cold meat or fish, hot vegetables and hot meat and fish dishes, as well as a dessert selection always including fresh fruit. One of the things we liked best about mealtimes was the complete absence of background music. There is an open air swimming pool on the 3rd floor which is big enough to get a decent swim in. There are sun loungers around the pool. The hotel is situated right across the road from the seafront. Be aware that (at least in winter months) there are strong waves and currents, but there is safe swimming at the harbour about 15 - 20 minutes walk away.
