Grand Hyatt Lanzarote Playa Dorada Resort

We came here with open eyes after reading negative reviews. Yes, it may not live up with the Grand Hyatt's luxury brand where we stayed somewhere else. However, it was a good solid 4 star after benchmarking with other 4/5 stars hotels at Canary islands as well as how much you paid. Stayed 10 nights at a family room on AI basis as preferring a bigger room with an extra bed to put our suitcases. Room was tastefully decorated with a 65" inch TV, coffee /tea machine with daily refilled coffee capulses and mini bar. Our room was on high floor with a good sized balcony facing the familys' pool and the sea. Despite staying at this family block, it was surprisingly quiet and we slept well most nights except the first few sweaty days and nights due to weak air cond at lowest 16C but did report the problem straight away. Insufficient cooling also happened in the bar area where evening performances took place. The outside area might be cooler but unfortunately chairs were all soaking wet and unable to sit on due to the high humidity. In fact, the hotel premises has a 5 star set up. This included good housekeeping - room very clean, the entrance, lobby, stairsway, the adults' pools area and sand area, lovely outdoor seating areas and availability of a few a la carte restaurants. The pool/ sand area facing to seaview were not too busy during our stay. We could easily get sun lounges every day after 10:30 a.m. Evening performances in general were good and diverse. Outdoor area which overlooked the pools was the perfect place for the pre-dinner evening drinks. That was our highlight every day. But then, the dated sun lounges, the poor food at the buffet restaurant, watered down alcoholic drinks at pool bar and cleanliness of public area may need to address. It would be nice if drinks at pool bar to be ordered through app and delivered to your sun lounges without queueing. We never saw any staff to walk around the pool area to take drinks order, collect empty drinkwares, wiped down dirty tables or picked up rubbish around the pool/ sand area. We also tried once at the Italian restaurant. Food was slightly better but it was not a pleasant dining experience. The whole dinner from being seated to finish our 3-course meal had been rushed to finish by 45 minutes. It had been too stressful and impersonal. Dared not to try any al la carte restaurant again for the rest of our stay. All in all, despite it was not a 5 star experience and required a lot of improvements, we did enjoy our stay!

Great location for the beach, restaurants and bars. The hotel staff were 5 star couldn't do enough for you.great for kids we travelled with a 10 year old and he loved the slides and football pitch. The food was ok, not 5 star, the breakfast & lunch were nice however the dinners seemed to be very much the same. We ate in the Italian and Mexican a la carte restaurants and they were just ok. Drinks were all good, house wine&cava is good, better than I’ve had in other hotels. Very clean, my son made friends which was a bonus because he would have been bored because the entertainment for over 10s wasn’t very good. Would I stay again… maybe I would try somewhere else only because I don’t think it’s a 5 star.. I would say ita a good 4 star, mainly due to facilities being a little tired and the quality of the food.

Here right now….(and been before) only came due to availability, familiarity and travel circumstances. The hotel is still pretending to be a 5 star…4 at best. The hotel has some good features, sea frontage (even though no direct beach access - a lovely beach is only a 3min walk away), there are sanded areas which make you feel connected to the sea/beach, spacious grounds, staff in general are nice, clean and tidy spaces, rooms are well apportioned (probably the best part of the hotel), music/atmosphere well apportioned in the pool areas (when we came last time it was like a rave in the main pool). For me it’s about the basics and on this occasion it was a service issue before arriving to the availability of loungers. As with most hotels there is a lounger policy, and like most hotels they don’t follow it. We’re not 7am wakers to bagsy a space. No loungers by 10am in the main areas where most kids want to be. Where the kids slides are there is no hope unless you reserve one. There’s actually quite a lot of space near the main pool but by far not enough loungers. I heard in peak times people are on the floor (very 5 star like!). Seen people carrying loungers from different areas. No offer of help. Front of house reception I feel a sense of uselessness or it’s not my problem mate. I tried to arrange a short notice private transfer as my flight was rescheduled at late notice and was met with a 72hr notice policy to book, I was told to take a taxi or Google it. A 3 star hotel ordered me a KFC before so not sure what the issue was here. Got to the hotel after finding a local transfer with minutes before take off to find 3 receptionist stood there playing the piano. Hotel has potential but is lost in deciding what it wants to be. There’s not a big enough programme for kids (they need to realise this and not believe in what they have). Entertainment at night is tailored towards the repeat old timers. Food is well below the standard you expect. Breakfast closes at 10.30. I think 11am is better especially as a perk for Grand Club members. One star for us as it’s just a glorified B&B, or Bed as the breakfast is bed. Had the buffet dinner one night last time we came for £100 and again I think they need to revisit their strategy here. Terrible for us but could be amazing for you.

We absolutely loved our stay! The hotel is beautiful, with lush greenery, lovely pools, great bars and spacious, spotless rooms. All the staff were friendly and helpful, and a special mention to Dylan, who made activities like archery and shooting so much fun. The food was amazing, including the restaurants you can book through the hotel’s brilliant mobile website. It’s so easy to use, with everything from hotel information and events to restaurant bookings and room service all in one place. Photos online really dont do the hotel justice. A perfect stay from start to finish. We’ll definitely be back next year and bringing our family!
