Grand Hotel Bonanno

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The location is very good for visiting Pisa and using the train stations nearby. The staff were always helpful and polite, we had two rooms and requested them near each other, which was honoured. One of our rooms was kindly upgraded from a single to a double room for free, which was appreciated. We only ate breakfast at this hotel and generally enjoyed it. The pistachio croissants are amazing. The bar was also great with reasonable prices, good service and atmosphere. My only slight concern was that when ordering at the bar, staff always asked for both your room number and name in a public space. I understand this is probably for charging drinks to rooms, but if you’re not used to sharing your room number publicly, it can feel a little uncomfortable from a security perspective. Nevertheless, we used and enjoyed the bar. Our rooms were always clean and well maintained. Free safe and coffee machine provided (but no milk/whitener). Only complaints would be that the mattress is very firm and there isn’t much storage, but otherwise this hotel is very good. We feel that the other reviews of the hotel aren’t reflective of our experience and are harsh.

We had a delightful stay at this hotel in April 2026. My husband and I arrived early from our flight, and we were welcomed by the friendly staff, who put our luggage in a secure storage room, allowing us to explore the city without suitcases. They also took the time to outline walking routes and points of interest on a detailed city map. When we returned, our room was ready, it was clean and quite comfortable, with a coffee machine and water. The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of options, including fresh pastries, seasonal fruits, and hot dishes, which we enjoyed each morning on the outdoor patio surrounded by lush greenery. Although we didn’t use the hotel’s restaurant, we did have drinks in the bar, where the attentive staff made this an enjoyable experience.

This hotel is located slightly out of the city centre but still within walking distance of the main attractions and the train station. It was about a 7 minute journey in a taxi from the airport. We arrived very late after our flight was delayed. Check in was efficient but not particularly friendly or welcoming. We were in room 226. End of corridor room. Very quiet with electronic shutters. Furniture was dated and bed was hard but I did sleep well. Breakfast is included with lots of sweet options and not so many savoury and very little fruit. All areas of hotel were absolutely spotless. We had a very early morning flight and were offered a take away breakfast with a bottle of water.Solid option for a hotel with no frills.

I was a bit concerned about our stay before we went to the Grand Hotel Bonanno due to some of the negative comments posted previously. However. I found our superior room to be quite spacious, clean and cool. The breakfast has lots of things to choose from and the price of meals and drinks in the restaurant is reasonable. We asked to get placed in a quiet room, which was OK most of the time, but the hotel is quite near a main railway line and the intercity trains are quite audible from about 6am. The most disappointing aspect of the hotel was the lack of friendliness from the staff. Not many smiles seen during our 3 night stay . When we arrived, I expected a smile and perhaps a "wecolme to the hotel Bonanno" but all we received was a surly look when I apologised for being early. I did not expect to be shown to the room straight away, but we were given a map and shown the way to the sights and almost told not come back until after 3pm. Other staff did not smile or want to interact either.

Overall fairly good. Not 4* for a number of reasons. Reception staff great. Room, even though deluxe, fairly basic, no mirror in the bedroom, most of the plug sockets not working, shower leaking from all the joints, although still usable. Bar prices very reasonable. Be wary of the restaurant. Very good at first but total rip off for the steak on the hot stone, mainly a very poor comunication problem. €32 for 1 person, it was not explained very well and most of the food went back as there was far to much. Our surprise at the cost was a shrug of the shoulders. They promote this dish but because their English is poor you really don't know what you're ordering, avoid unless you can speak Italian or can eat 3 peoples portions of meat!! Location is good, 15 minutes to the main attractions.
