Hotel Borgo San Luigi

This resort looks far better in pictures than in person. It is listed as a four star resort but it is not. It is may not even be a three star resort. However, the resort charges four star prices that do not match the guest experience. The tree-lined driveway and the surrounding grounds by the reception area are beautiful but unfortunately provide a false sense of the experience that will follow. The rooms and furniture are old and tattered, the plumbing and shower fixtures in the bathrooms are cracked and leaky, the cushions by the pool have cigarette burns and the food is, at best, mediocre. The bread is stale and tasteless, the eggs are cold, and much of the fruit at breakfast appears to come out of jars. The service at dinner is often poor and makes one wonder if some of the waiters have received any training whatsoever. Although dinner was supposed to be included in the cost of our reservation, the resort charged full price for the steak florentine and they told me only after the bill was presented that the steak was not included as part of the cost of the inclusive dinner. I could have more easily accepted that extra charge if the steak was even average but it wasn't. It was tough and we had to return it to the kitchen to be cooked further. When it was returned 20 minutes later, it was still very rare yet still tasteless, which is a combination that is tough to replicate. The location is remote so your dining options are limited in the area which makes you feel a bit captive to the mediocre dining experience. The service by management is uneven. While some staff were very friendly and helpful, others seemed to care less. After our daughter was locked in the bathroom for 20 minutes because the lock broke, only the maintenance man said he was sorry about the situation. Other front desk personnel who knew about the situation never asked us how she was doing after she was freed. One final warning is to review your bill carefully before checking out. When I first made our reservation, I was overcharged but it was corrected after I pointed out the error. When checking out, I discovered that we were charged for two dinners and drinks that we never had. The resort has potential but needs a significant infusion of cash to update the facilities, an overhaul and improvement of the food service and offerings, and a retraining of the staff to improve the client experience.

There are hotels you enjoy, and then there are places that become part of the journey itself. Hotel Borgo San Luigi was exactly that for us. From the moment we arrived, the beautiful historic buildings, gardens, pool and peaceful surroundings gave us that wonderful Tuscan feeling we had hoped for. The location is fantastic for exploring Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Florence, Pisa and the many charming villages nearby, yet the hotel itself is so relaxing that some days you simply don’t want to leave. The food deserves a special mention. Breakfast was a lovely start to every morning, and the restaurant genuinely impressed us with wonderful Italian flavours, beautifully prepared dishes and a relaxed atmosphere that made dinner part of the experience. Most of all, the staff made us feel genuinely welcome. Warm, attentive and friendly without ever feeling formal or rehearsed, exactly the kind of hospitality that gives a place its soul. Borgo San Luigi feels like the Tuscany you dream about before arriving: old stone buildings, beautiful gardens, warm evenings, great food, a glass of wine and absolutely no reason to hurry. We arrived expecting a lovely hotel. We left feeling we had found our little corner of Tuscany. Five stars without hesitation, we will be back. ❤️🇮🇹

Our stay was disappointing because of the attitude of the staff. On our very first evening, we wanted to make a reservation at the hotel’s restaurant for the second night of our stay. The receptionist kept telling us, “Don’t rush, there’s no need to book now,” “maybe you want to think about it” even though we clearly said we wanted to reserve a table. The same attitude continued throughout our stay. At breakfast, I was told I couldn’t use my electronic cigarette at the table. That was perfectly fine, so I moved to a table by the pool after being told it was allowed there. I took my coffee and a croissant with me, only to be immediately told that I was not allowed to eat at the pool table either, so I had to move back again. Another unpleasant moment happened at the pool, during the day they had no issue with children constantly jumping into the pool and splashing everyone sitting nearby trying to enjoy a drink. It felt like the rules were enforced very selectively. The worst experience happened at check-out. We paid our bill in cash (over €600), and one €200 banknote was rejected because, according to the receptionist, “the machine said it s not right” When we asked whether this had ever happened before, we were told, with a very unpleasant attitude, that it had never happened to anyone else. We were made to feel as though we were trying to pay with counterfeit money. Because of this, we had to drive to a bank in Siena, where they checked the banknote with their machine and confirmed that it was genuine and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. We were worried that something might actually be wrong with the note, but the bank reassured us that it was perfectly valid. This entire experience left us feeling unwelcome. The hotel itself is very nice.

We absolutely adored our stay at Borgo San Luigi. You arrive by a treelined avenue, reception staff were friendly and welcoming, bags are taken to your room, the car is valet parked and you are shown around. We had breakfast and dinner there everynight and the food and service were fabulous. I can still remember the wonderful white chocolate mousse desert - superb. The pool is wonderful with lots of beds and plenty of room so guests all have their own space. The bar staff are attentive and professional. We stayed here at the end of a 3 week holiday touring around and found it wonderfully relaxing. We would highly recommend and will definitely be back.

This is a lovely place in the middle of the Tuscan countryside. We had a car and we felt that this was centrally located to visit many of the small towns. We had breakfast each morning and had dinner a couple of nights. Food was delicious and the service was perfect. The property is beautiful and our room felt like a Tuscan retreat.
