Sugar Beach Mauritius

Thank you everyone at Sugar Beach for giving our family a very special holiday. Eleven of us, aged 12 to (almost) 80, from UK and Australia enjoyed all the resort had to offer: wonderful beachside setting, immaculate grounds, spacious rooms, many activities, variety of restaurants, beautiful pools (the peaceful adult pool a favourite for some!), and spectacular sunsets. All that was enhanced by the superb way we were looked after. Lucas’s broad smile and warm greeting on our arrival set the tone for our whole visit, when nothing was too much trouble. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful: reception staff who readily responded to questions and requests; head of housekeeping who came round at breakfast to ensure everything was satisfactory; those who kept our rooms spotless (and the young woman who mopped floors with dignity and poise); porters who managed our luggage; all those who worked in the grounds; the Beach Squad who brought us refreshments on the beach or by the pool; and waiters who we got to know throughout our two weeks. Food in the three restaurants was of a consistently high standard. The Patio Restaurant, where we ate most of our dinners, has a buffet system with a huge selection of starters, main courses and deserts. Mention must be made of the spectacular display of chocolate decorations for Easter Day! And a particular shout-out to the chefs who prepared special meals just for me to accommodate a specific dietary requirement - thank you. The Buddha Bar food was superbly presented and delicious, but the service was unacceptably slow. Mare Mare provided some of us with a lovely impromptu lunch one day, and a superb dinner for all of us where Irwin served us with panache! As others have said, book tables in these two restaurants in advance, particularly if you are a large party, as we were. The sea here is shallow and calm, protected by a coral reef. We all enjoyed the variety of water activities on offer. There is plenty to see both within the lagoon and on snorkelling trips beyond the reef. We took advantage of the land based games as well, though perhaps didn't do justice to the expert croquet tuition we were given! We were half board, which worked well for our group particularly as we were out some days for lunch, and there was an allowance towards the a la carte menus at Buddha Bar and Mare Mare. Also we could use the facilities and restaurant at La Pirogue, the sister hotel next door. We had considered going All Inclusive, but there would still have been additional costs and on reflection half board worked best meaning we just paid for what we used. We had a few trips out taking advantage of the opportunity to play golf nearby, using the taxis provided by the hotel to take us to Port Louis and the botanic gardens, as well as the Ebony Forest and Chamerel Sands. One tip: be clear with the driver how long you want to spend anywhere, and where you want to go. There are suggested tours, but these can be adjusted to suit. Taxis fares are agreed at the start and paid in cash at the end of the trip. Our highlight was a boat trip arranged at the hotel. We were the only passengers on a catamaran for the day, with lunch provided. It was wonderful! Our only comment was it would have been good to have been able to sit as a group in the evening for a quiet drink, away from the entertainment area, which was loud if sitting nearby. Sugar Beach is not cheap, but it was worth every penny for the relaxed atmosphere, attentive staff, beautiful grounds and buildings and perfect setting. We left Sugar Beach with wonderful memories and we would certainly recommend it. Hopefully we’ll return one day!

Dinner at Maré Maré was spectacular. Chef Hansen brought the dishes to life. The quality was out of this world. Sandeep took such great care of us. Throughly enjoyed my experience.
