Akumal Bay Resort

The Location was fabulous, the 1st thing that we noticed was how peaceful and relaxed it was, We got a Drink on arrival at reception along with a very warm welcome. The staff everywhere in the hotel were warm & friendly and found they went out of the way to be helpful, Hola whenever we passed anyone by. The food was lovely with so much choice on offer. The Room was lovely, clean & modern with lots of sockets for plugs also USB & USC PORTS, The hot tub on the Balcony was great & made use of that a couple of times. Was sad to leave & would most definitely return there.

My wife and I arrived at Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort feeling a little uncertain after reading some mixed reviews, particularly about the seasonal sargassum. We decided to take a chance, and we are so glad we did. From the moment we arrived, we were absolutely blown away. We had been advised not to plan too many activities because the resort has a way of drawing you in, helping you relax and making you feel like part of its family. That is exactly what happened. Within two days, we never wanted to leave. Our ground-floor Garden View room in Building 3 was beautiful and comfortable. Waking up every morning to the sound of the waves was unforgettable. Carmen, who cared for our room, was fantastic, kind, attentive and always willing to go the extra mile. When we mentioned that we had forgotten toothpaste, she happily helped us find some. The service throughout the resort was outstanding. Luis in the buffet could not do enough for us. He remembered us every day, anticipated my coffee and was always ready to help with a smile. Valentina was also exceptional, and Hector, the beach manager, took the time to stop and chat with us. There were many other wonderful staff members whose names we unfortunately cannot remember, but their kindness did not go unnoticed. A special thank-you also goes to the concierge, Allan. He greeted us warmly every day, made certain we were well cared for and arranged thoughtful surprises both in our room and during dinner. Those personal touches made our vacation feel genuinely special. The food exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed all the à la carte restaurants, with the Mediterranean restaurant becoming our favourite. The buffet was consistently excellent, and we even enjoyed room service one morning and again one afternoon. Wherever we ate, the food and service were wonderful. The spa was another highlight and one of the best massage experiences we have ever had. Martha looked after me, while Gilberta, whom we called Gil, looked after my wife. Both were exceptional, and the entire spa experience was relaxing and beautifully done. The pools, gardens and common areas were clean, attractive and carefully maintained. Sargassum was heavy during part of our visit, making the ocean less inviting for swimming. However, this was a seasonal act of nature—not a failure of the resort. The staff worked hard to manage it; we never experienced the unpleasant smell mentioned in some reviews, and we still enjoyed several absolutely gorgeous beach days. What we will remember most is the warmth of the staff and the wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. Akumal Bay gave us exactly what we needed: an opportunity to slow down, reconnect and feel genuinely cared for. We cannot say enough about our experience and would return without hesitation.

What can I say, this place really is perfect, for us! I know reviews/experience is personal so this is ours. This was our second time here (September 2025 being our first) & we have already booked for next year. We stayed on the 2nd floor in block 3, premium & it was just as lovely as last year. Room: There are 14 plug sockets, all in the right places too, which is rare in hotels (7 double) one of which is in the bathroom & 3 of which have USB sockets. Air con worked wonderfully & mini bar filled with beer & soft drinks, two bags of crisps & two small chocolate bars. Toiletries in the bathroom & a mini loofah! Whirlpool bath on the terrace which was lovely too. In premium you get a black wrist bracelet instead of blue, beach towels are left in your room every evening, you can choose your own pillow & you can have an aromatherapy spray of your choice each evening or as often as you want. You also get a blue tote bag & a hat as a gift in your room when you arrive. Restaurants: Four a-la-cartes & the buffet. Our favourite was Kooben & Alux, my husband liked the grill too, over by blocks 1 & 2. The buffet had been scaled back while we were there (1st - 15th September) as the hotel was under occupied but better that than having food wasted. They would always make something for you though if you wanted it. I have to mention the absolutely incredible people who work there, I don’t have all their names but they really are the loveliest people, everyone greets you with a great big smile & ‘Hola’ The names I do have though are: Arora ‘egg lady’ who is absolutely ‘excellente!!’ Muchos gracias!! ❤️❤️ Holi (such a beautiful smiley lady) in the Mexican restaurant ❤️❤️ (Alux). Jose, Julio, Joel, Ana, Raquel & Leandro in Kooben, Rosa in the lobby bar, Alan in customer relations (thank you again for the flowers in our room & our anniversary table in the Mexican). Ivan at the beach bar, the ladies cleaning our room, brilliant job, thank you. See you all next year!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️ Beach: There was a fair bit of seaweed (sargassum) but not as much as last year but honestly, it’s nature & the fault of us humans & they are out every day clearing it so no point moaning about it. We sat at the rocky end outside blocks 3 & 4 which was perfect for us as there was no one else there! 😃. There was the beach bar usually manned by an absolutely wonderful man called Ivan, he used to tell me about the wildlife & when the badger made an appearance, he came over to tell me. Turtles: We saw FOUR turtles come on to the beach to lay their eggs while we were there, a very emotional, beautiful thing to be fortunate enough to witness. Hadn’t realised how HUGE the turtles can be & an hour before we were due to leave, baby turtles hatched!! 😍 There are no words (even though I’ve said a lot 🤣) to truly get across how much we love this place, you literally do feel the pressures & weight of life lift from your shoulders the minute you step on to the property. I cried when we got there (tears of utter happiness & after a 10 hour flight 🤣) & I cried when we left (tears of sadness, really didn’t want to leave) but as I said, we have already booked for next year. All in all, a truly magical, special, heavenly place. Thank you so much Akumal Bay, we truly love you, see you in 2027!

Stayed a week in September 2026. Excellent experience. -Mexican owned and Mexican staff. -The staff makes you feel like long lost friends! We LOVED each and every person we met. We want to return just to see the staff/friends we made. Trinidad (excellent manager material), Alan (the fun guy), Rafael (THE BEST LIFEGUARD), Adilene (friendly public relations), Alejandro(the Dancing King), Hiram (Yoga with love), Diego (gentle Sound Bath), Carlos & Luis (sweet buffet servers that have been there for 30+ years!), Blanca (The Drink Queen), Ricardo (Heavenly Hands at the spa), Erica (will massage you like she's kneading bread and loving it) and others! -The ground floor beach/garden room was lovely, comfortable & perfect for walking out to the beach to enjoy the sunrise and waves. Mini-fridge was stocked with drinks and chips. We enjoyed the outside beds as well. -Cleanliness was clearly a priority around the entire resort. The ash trays were always clean and stamped with a cute turtle. We saw employees cleaning ceiling fans in a restaurant after hours. The housekeeper was prompt and thorough. Top Notch cleaning. Don't think I ever saw trash outside of what I threw in my room can. -The food was good. In this “off season” there was no taco bar. The buffet was plenty for us but looked smaller than the busy season would have been. The restaurants had unique & interesting options with beautiful presentation. A benefit of going in "the off season" was that there was no line and we were quickly served. ALUXE Mexican restaurant was our favorite. Among all the restaurants some dishes we enjoyed and some not so much. They each had 4 course meals. If you don't like something, wait until the next course, you probably will, OR just order something else. Yummy drinks were offered everywhere we went. -$$-The “off season” was way less expensive, less people & quiet BUT more rain (a little most days and a lot on one day) with lower visibility for snorkeling due to rain and wind BUT I STILL saw a lot of fish, rays and a nurse shark. -The smaller infinity pools outside our room were our favorite place to chill after snorkeling. Clean and beautiful. -There was live music every night. There was one gentleman that played the keyboard by himself and he was SO TALENTED. -The painting class and salsa class was SO FUN! -We enjoyed the zen music that is played every morning outside at the bar. -The spa had JUST opened a couple of weeks before our stay and it was BEAUTIFUL! Highly recommend the 90 minute ancestral massage with soothing aromas and the perfect touch. The therapist even plays a conch shell, sings over you and says a short Spanish prayer. Divine. The hydrotherapy session is lovely with a head and neck massage, sauna, steam room and multiple pools at different temps. One was a cold plunge. We LOVED Akumal Bay Beach Resort and Spa! We will definitely be returning.

Today our second stay at this beautiful hotel comes to an end, and we are honestly a little sad that it is already time to leave. Once again, we felt welcome and comfortable from the very first day. What makes this hotel so special to us are the people who work here. You really feel that their kindness and warmth are genuine. We would especially like to mention Marissa from the Lobby Bar. She always has a smile on her face, is incredibly warm and attentive, and somehow always notices when someone needs something. No matter when you see her, she makes you feel welcome. It is people like her who really make a difference during a vacation. We would also like to mention Karsten. He is extremely helpful, always takes the time to answer questions and organizes some really great excursions. You can tell that he genuinely cares about guests having a wonderful time. But honestly, these two are just examples of the entire team. During both of our stays, we did not meet a single unfriendly member of staff. Quite the opposite. Whether in the restaurants, at the bars, on the beach, housekeeping or anywhere else around the hotel, everyone has been friendly, warm and helpful. And that is something we definitely do not take for granted. Of course, there can be a rain shower from time to time or some seaweed on the beach. That is nature and simply not something anyone can control. What matters to us is how a hotel deals with these things, and here we have always seen everyone doing their best to make the most of every situation. Even with the little things, like something missing from the minibar or having a small request, you simply let someone know and they take care of it. It is all these little things that make you feel so comfortable and well looked after here. This was our second time staying here, but definitely not our last. We are leaving with so many wonderful memories and are already looking forward to coming back. Thank you to the entire team for another wonderful stay and, most of all, for making us feel so welcome.
