Where do I begin? Unfortunately, our experience at Riviera Ocean Paradise was far from what we had hoped for, and I left feeling extremely disappointed. I travelled to Mexico with my mum in May for a two-week holiday, which I’d arranged as a surprise for her birthday. Having visited Mexico previously and absolutely loved it, I was really looking forward to sharing the experience with her and making some wonderful memories together. Sadly, although we enjoyed spending time together, the hotel itself was a real letdown. Arrival – Not the Best Start! Our flight was relatively straightforward, but unfortunately, things started going wrong as soon as we arrived in Mexico. I had pre-booked a private airport transfer and deliberately arranged the collection for 30 minutes after our scheduled landing time to allow for immigration and collecting our luggage. Despite this, our driver was nowhere to be seen. We spent approximately an hour trying to locate him, with no success. Even other drivers at the airport could see we were struggling and kindly offered to let us use their phones to contact the transfer company. Eventually, everything was resolved, but not before I’d accumulated a rather unpleasant amount in international roaming charges from trying to sort the situation out. Although the transfer wasn’t the hotel’s responsibility, it certainly wasn’t the relaxing start we’d hoped for. By the time we finally arrived at the resort, I was just relieved to be there. Check-In – Our Room Request Was Completely Ignored Unfortunately, things didn’t improve much when we arrived. When booking our holiday through our travel agent, I had specifically requested a twin room, as I was travelling with my mum. I’d also contacted the hotel directly before our arrival to reconfirm this request and had received an email confirming that a twin room would be provided. However, when checking in, I asked the receptionist to confirm our room configuration and was informed that the hotel was fully booked and therefore unable to accommodate our request. This was incredibly frustrating, particularly as I had gone out of my way to confirm the arrangements beforehand. We had been travelling for approximately 15 hours, were exhausted and simply wanted to shower, change and relax. Rather than spend our first evening arguing at reception, I decided to leave the issue until the following day. We managed to have a relatively relaxing evening, grabbed something to eat as we were both starving, and headed to bed. However, sharing a bed with my mum for a two-week holiday was certainly not what either of us had planned! Our First Impressions of the Resort The following morning, we headed down for breakfast. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t particularly impressed. The selection was fairly standard, and nothing really stood out. After breakfast, we decided to explore the resort. There are little shuttle buses that transport guests around the grounds, but we preferred to walk and have a look around ourselves. Eventually, we made our way down to the beach, and I was genuinely shocked by the amount of seaweed. I appreciate that sargassum is a natural occurrence and completely outside the hotel’s control, but the sheer volume was incredibly disappointing. The beach was one of the things we’d been looking forward to enjoying, and unfortunately, the seaweed made it very unappealing. I must give credit to the staff working tirelessly to clear it. They were clearly doing their best, but with the amount constantly washing ashore, it seemed like an impossible task. This certainly isn’t a criticism of their efforts, but it’s something worth being aware of if you’re booking a holiday here, particularly if spending time on the beach is important to you. Missing Belongings and Finally Being Moved Rooms A few days into our holiday, I noticed that a pair of my pyjama bottoms had disappeared from our room. I approached reception to ask for assistance, but rather than anyone taking ownership of the issue, I was passed from one department to another. Reception directed me to Guest Services, Guest Services directed me to Lost and Found, and when I eventually tried to contact Lost and Found, it was closed. By this point, I was becoming increasingly frustrated. Not only had we been placed in a room that wasn’t suitable for our requirements, despite having received written confirmation beforehand, but now an item of my clothing had gone missing, and nobody seemed particularly interested in helping. I eventually sent an email to the hotel’s customer service department outlining my concerns. I explained the room situation, the missing pyjama bottoms and how disappointed I was that we were having to share a bed despite specifically requesting otherwise. I asked the hotel to come up with a suitable solution. The following day, I received a call from the concierge asking me to come to reception. And suddenly, a twin room was available! To be fair, once the hotel agreed to move us, everything was coordinated very quickly and efficiently, which I appreciated. However, I couldn’t help feeling frustrated that it had taken a formal complaint for something to be done. This should have been resolved when we first arrived, particularly as our room requirements had already been confirmed in writing. Our Second Room – Better Sleeping Arrangements, Worse Accommodation We were moved into a twin room in the family section, overlooking the children’s splash pool. Not exactly the ideal location for two adults travelling without children, but by this point, we were simply relieved to have separate beds. I also felt as though I’d caused the hotel a major inconvenience by asking for something that had already been agreed, so I accepted the room rather than complain further. Unfortunately, the second room was noticeably more tired and rundown than our original accommodation. Several things weren’t functioning properly. Some of the electrical sockets didn’t work, two of the drawers wouldn’t close properly, the bath had no hot water, and the shower temperature was temperamental. The room was functional, but certainly not what I’d expect from a hotel of this standard. I reported the hot water issue to reception and was assured that someone would be sent to investigate. Whether anyone actually attended, I couldn’t say, as we never received any further communication or update. Again, it was the lack of follow-through that was particularly frustrating. The Pool and Beach We spent most of our days relaxing around the swimming pool closest to the beach, which was a pleasant area. Given the amount of seaweed along the shoreline, we didn’t really have much desire to spend time in the sea, so the pool became our main place to relax. Unfortunately, this was also where we experienced one of our biggest frustrations with the service. Poolside Service – Tips Seemed More Important Than Guests I found the attitude towards tipping at this hotel particularly disappointing. There were servers walking around the pool taking drinks orders, but we repeatedly found ourselves being overlooked or ignored. On several occasions, staff would walk straight past us, even when we tried to get their attention. However, the moment we had money visibly in our hands, the level of attention changed dramatically. Suddenly, staff seemed much more interested in approaching us and offering service. I found this incredibly frustrating. I have absolutely no problem tipping, and I’m more than happy to reward good service. In fact, I regularly do. However, I strongly believe that you should tip because you’ve received good service, not feel obliged to tip in advance simply to receive service in the first place. Sadly, this became a recurring theme throughout our stay. It often felt as though staff were more interested in whether they were going to receive a tip than actually looking after guests. I appreciate that tipping is customary in Mexico, but basic hospitality and a friendly attitude should not depend on whether a guest is visibly holding money. Food and Restaurants – A Major Disappointment Unfortunately, the food was another significant letdown. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a fussy eater, so I don’t necessarily expect every restaurant or buffet to cater perfectly to my tastes. However, my mum is the complete opposite. She enjoys a wide variety of food and is usually very easy to please. Even she was disappointed with the quality and selection. We genuinely struggled with the food throughout our two-week stay, and there were many occasions when we simply couldn’t find anything we particularly wanted to eat. We ended up relying heavily on cakes, snacks and coffee from the coffee shop, which is certainly not what you expect when you’ve paid for an all-inclusive holiday. The food wasn’t just repetitive; in our opinion, the overall quality was poor. There were, however, a few exceptions. The Steak Restaurant – From Our Favourite to Our Worst Experience The steak restaurant was easily our favourite dining venue, and we were fortunate enough to visit four times during our stay. Our first three visits were really enjoyable. The food was lovely, and we were pleased to have found somewhere we genuinely looked forward to eating. I would particularly like to mention José, who was absolutely wonderful! Although he spoke very little English, he made such an effort to communicate with us and ensure we were looked after. He was so friendly, warm and welcoming, and his kindness really stood out. He even sang Happy Birthday to my mum, which was incredibly sweet and such a lovely personal touch. It’s little gestures like these that make such a difference, and José really is a credit to the restaurant. We were also fortunate enough to secure a reservation to celebrate my mum’s birthday, and the team went out of their way to make her feel special. They surprised her with a birthday cake and got practically the entire restaurant involved in singing Happy Birthday. It was such a wonderful moment, and I was genuinely grateful for the effort they made. Unfortunately, our fourth and final visit was a completely different story. The service was absolutely diabolical. We waited over an hour for our starters, and by the time our main courses arrived, we’d been waiting close to two hours. When the food finally appeared, the portions were noticeably smaller than on our previous visits. After such an incredibly long wait, we were so disappointed that we eventually got up and left during our main course. I’m honestly not sure what went wrong that evening, particularly as our previous experiences had been so positive, but it was a terrible way to finish our final visit. Despite that disappointing final experience, I want to reiterate how wonderful José was. His genuine warmth, kindness and willingness to make an effort with us were exactly the qualities we wished we’d experienced more consistently throughout the resort. Italian and Route 66 Restaurants On a more positive note, we also enjoyed the Italian restaurant and Route 66. Both provided some welcome alternatives to the buffet, and we had enjoyable meals at each. Unfortunately, these few positive dining experiences weren’t enough to make up for the overall disappointment with the food throughout our stay. A Wonderful Massage Experience – Thank You, Daniel! One of the genuine highlights of my holiday was the massage I booked through one of the beach vendors, Daniel. I initially treated myself to a 60-minute deep tissue massage, and honestly, it was one of the best massages I’ve ever had! I enjoyed it so much that I immediately arranged to return a few days later for a two-hour treatment. And wow! Daniel has absolute magic hands! Both treatments were fantastic, and I left feeling completely relaxed. If you’re visiting the resort and enjoy massages, I would highly recommend looking out for Daniel. He was brilliant, and this was easily one of my favourite experiences of the entire holiday. Evening Entertainment Unfortunately, I also found the evening entertainment rather underwhelming. In my opinion, it seemed to be aimed predominantly at families with children rather than offering a good balance of entertainment for adults. I completely appreciate that this is a family-friendly resort, but it would have been nice to have a little more variety for guests travelling without children. We didn’t find ourselves particularly excited about the evening entertainment, which was another disappointment. A Special Birthday Surprise – Thank You, Irvin! Despite all the frustrations, I do want to acknowledge the members of staff who genuinely made an effort, particularly our concierge, Irvin. Following my complaint, Irvin was assigned to assist us during the remainder of our stay. He was absolutely lovely, friendly, attentive and genuinely helpful. He regularly contacted me by message to check how we were getting on, whether we needed assistance or if he could help arrange restaurant reservations. Although I made most of our bookings myself through the hotel app, he did manage to secure us an additional reservation at the steak restaurant so we could properly celebrate my mum’s birthday. We had originally hoped to dine there on her actual birthday, but we’d booked a day trip and didn’t return to the hotel until almost 11pm. However, what happened when we returned to our room that evening was probably the loveliest moment of our entire holiday. We opened the door to discover that our room had been decorated with beautiful pink and purple balloons, along with a little birthday cake for my mum. It was completely unexpected and such a thoughtful surprise. After everything we’d experienced up to that point, it genuinely meant so much to us. My mum was delighted, and I was incredibly grateful that someone had taken the time to make her birthday feel special. It was exactly the kind of thoughtful hospitality gesture that can make such a difference to a guest’s experience. Irvin deserves particular recognition for his kindness and support throughout our stay. I also want to thank José and the restaurant team for the effort they made during our birthday celebration. Those moments were truly appreciated. Overall Service – Sadly Lacking Aside from a few lovely individuals, I found the general attitude of many staff members disappointing. There seemed to be a lack of warmth and genuine hospitality throughout the resort. Far too often, we felt as though we were inconveniencing staff simply by asking for assistance or requesting something that should have been straightforward. I’m not expecting staff to go above and beyond every moment of the day, but a friendly smile, a welcoming attitude and a willingness to help should be basic expectations in a hotel. Unfortunately, that wasn’t consistently our experience. Having worked in hospitality myself, I understand how demanding the industry can be. I also appreciate that staff work incredibly hard, often in difficult conditions. However, good service isn’t necessarily about extravagant gestures or special treatment. Sometimes it’s simply about making guests feel welcome, listening when something goes wrong and taking ownership of resolving problems. Sadly, I felt that these basics were missing far too often. Final Thoughts – Would We Return? Absolutely Not. Looking back, I have mixed feelings about our holiday. We did have some lovely moments, particularly celebrating my mum’s birthday, enjoying our massages and spending quality time together. However, those memories were largely down to the fact that we enjoyed each other’s company rather than the experience provided by the hotel. I had booked this holiday as a special birthday surprise for my mum, and I really wanted everything to be wonderful. Instead, I spent far too much of our two weeks feeling frustrated, disappointed and, at times, as though we were an inconvenience to the hotel. Between the room issues, missing belongings, maintenance problems, poor food, inconsistent service and the general attitude towards tipping, there were simply too many disappointments. I genuinely feel that the hotel’s efforts to celebrate my mum’s birthday were the one thing that really stood out as exceptional. I am incredibly grateful to Irvin, José and Daniel, who each made a positive difference to our holiday in their own way. Their kindness, warmth and genuine effort were very much appreciated. Unfortunately, a few lovely gestures cannot make up for an otherwise disappointing two-week stay. What makes this even more frustrating is that I’d actually visited Mexico in February, just a few months earlier, and stayed at a different resort where the experience was worlds apart. The difference in food quality, service, atmosphere and overall hospitality was enormous. Having now experienced both, I would strongly recommend spending a little more, if your budget allows, and considering another resort. In my opinion, there are much better hotels available for a similar price, and even spending an additional couple of hundred pounds could make an enormous difference to your holiday experience. I also want to reiterate that the seaweed situation is not the hotel’s fault. I could see how hard the beach team were working, and they deserve credit for their efforts. Unfortunately, the sheer amount of seaweed still had a significant impact on our enjoyment of the beach. Ultimately, we made the best of our holiday and enjoyed spending two weeks together, but I came home feeling that the hotel had fallen well below my expectations. Would I return? Absolutely not. Would I recommend it? Unfortunately, no. Mexico is a beautiful country, and I would return in a heartbeat, but next time, I would choose a different hotel. I sincerely hope the management take guest feedback seriously, particularly regarding food quality, staff attitudes, room maintenance and the expectation of tipping before receiving basic service. A holiday should leave you wanting to return, not feeling relieved that you chose to make the best of it.
I loved vanessa from entertainment team .very friendly and entertaining.
Check in Privilege check in is separate from main, you have to go to their area. Don’t wait in a queue at main check in to be told this, just go off & find the privilege area, your name is on a “welcome sign”. Check in is painfully slow, after a 10+ hour flight & travel from airport to hotel arriving at 7pm local time, we just wanted to get to the room. We finally got to the room after 9pm. But we were supposed to then go on a tour with the Butler who you get assigned on check in but as the kids were exhausted & jet lagged we couldn’t do this. Emmanuel was fab though & told us essential information for that evening & would catch up with us the next day for a tour etc. There were supposed to be gift packs for the kids on arrival however we didn’t receive these. We didn’t question it however as it would probably have been some tat we don’t need. You can hear through the walls! Room Privilege suite - two double beds & a pull out double sofa bed. Garden view (tree canopy) balcony with jacuzzi bath (very old) Dated room. Basin leaked. Jacuzzi bath in bathroom leaked downstairs. Cleaning - not the best at all, beds made an a quick mop but that’s about it. Bathroom rarely cleaned. Mini fridge always replenished (selection of beers, sodas, water, milkshake, spirits & snacks). Good clothing space but could do with more drawers esp for a family of 4 staying for 2 weeks. Roaches in the bedroom - requested a room chance but wasn’t catered for, recommended deep clean but again it was just a quick mop around, unsure if they sprayed. Sliding doors to balcony leaked during heavy rain. No key cards to get into the room, this was done via the bracelet they give you on check in. Really good idea as always forgetting the card. Only annoying if one of the kids wanted to pop back, we had to go with them. Pools There are a number of pools to use, the Privilege pool just has a section for privilege guests, if you use these sunbeds you have access to the premium drinks & poolside snacks; other sunbeds despite being privilege don’t have this. It doesn’t appear to be monitored so if you’re not privilege then I guess you could use them. There are different coloured wristbands for package. The pools get really busy, despite having signs for no sunbed reserving this is ignored & not policed at all so you do have to just go with it & pop your towel down, it’s not massively early though, id say about 7ish is when it starts. The main entertainment pool is rammed and beds reserved very early. All the pools have swim up bars. They open at 10am. The water park pool is shallow & has lots of sprinklers for the kids as well as slides (they’re not fast), adults are not allowed on the slides. Very easy to bump heads on the underneath parts of the slides as these are not sectioned off. Entertainment at pools for kids are at the water park, adult only & entertainment pool. Includes foam parties, games etc. The pools are quite rough, not tiled but made to look like sand, some parts are breaking off & there were a few grazes and cut toes by the end. There are lifeguards at all pools. Towel change at all pools. No proof required (for privilege at least) just grab & go. There is a toilet block at every pool. Dated but cleaned regularly. There is a kids play park located next to the water park pool which is quite good. Activity There are a lot of activities on the schedule which can be accessed via the website/app you get once you’ve checked in. This isn’t updated to say whether something isn’t on, some activities are weather dependant. Bowling - really old, smells awful in there. You have to take socks & wear the bowling shoes. We didn’t bring socks so couldn’t play. Did get busy in there from what we saw especially in the evening & on overcast/rainy days. Paddle/Tennis/basketball courts. Available to use at any time of the day. There is a batting cage in need of some love but works fine. Evening entertainment is listed on the app or via a message from your butler (they use WhatsApp to communicate). Shows are good. Some are outside the main square & some are in the indoor theatre area. Much prefer the outside shows as it can feel like you’re trapped in the theatre during a performance/show. Kids club areas - always something going on. PlayStations & pool tables for older kids. No booking required. Check app for activities. Food & Drink Food is quite good, the main Buffett restaurant can get a bit repetitive but the quality is good. As privilege guests, you have access to all the restaurants as many times as you want. You can book this via your butler or the app. Japanese - this goes fast even for privilege. If it’s full to book you can queue from 8.30 (go early some people queue hours before - mad) at the buffet restaurant to make a reservation. They might try to upsell you into buying a bottle of wine to get a better seating time. Food was alright. Nothing massively special & unfortunately the performance aspect of it was lacking. We ate there twice. Privilege lounge - breakfast (small buffet & menu items), nice & chilled, not as crazy as the buffet but not as much choice either. Lunch is just menu options, nice food. Dinner - delicious! La Laconda - Italian - average food. Great service. Nice environment. Steak restaurant- nice food, really slow service. You can upgrade the steak options. We got two free steak upgrades as part of our package which could be used in most of the restaurants. Margarita restaurant - Mexican. This place is a walk up but if you are privilege you can make a booking. Food is really average. Vegetarian option has chorizo so not sure how that works. Service is slow. Wouldn’t go back. La Terreza - can’t book via privilege, walk up only. Has sittings for 6pm & 8pm for a dinner show. Make reservation on the night at 5pm there. Ice cream shop - doesn’t open until 4pm which is a shame. Alright choice of flavours but nothing like what’s advertised. You can get mr whippy style ice cream at the bar by the water park during the day. Mikes coffee shop - good selection of coffees, teas, iced coffees, smoothies, pasties, sandwiches etc. cups size for coffee is soooo small. Queues at peak times are very long & slow. Nice vibe inside though. Not unlike a Starbucks/costa. Sports bar - smelt bad; like an old social club with years of sweat plastered to the walls. Left quite quickly. Room service - delivered like an uber eats/delivery within 45 minutes. Included in privilege. Beach Quite a thin beach area but it’s nice. Seaweed is rife but cleared quickly. Can be smelly first thing in the morning. Lots of sunbed choice. There is also a pool right on the beach so best of both worlds. Privilege beach area is at the back of the restaurant & has waiter drinks service (but actually everywhere does for everyone so not that special). There is a juice bar serving fresh smoothies. There are water sports activities you can book (pay separately), but there are also some activities like paddle boarding which is included, again these are weather dependent. Timings can be seen on the app. Beach is well kept & sand is lovely. It isn’t a private beach so there are walkers up & down from other hotels. Seems pretty safe though. Shops Obviously overpriced as always in these places. Snacks, clothing, jewellery, souvenirs etc. They do sell cigarettes (yes, even though banned you can buy cigarettes & smoke at the resort in certain areas, no vapes although people do sell these on the beach). Smoking areas are cordoned off by rope sections in various locations. No policing though so people would leave these areas. Not bad though. Never bothered us. There is an arcade place but everything is extra cost in there. Everything seems a bit dated. They have a random escape room & laser tag but really basic so don’t get excited. Gym Gym is massive & fairly well equipped. Biggest one I’ve seen at a hotel. Gets busy early morning. Spa We didn’t book treatments. They were all very expensive. You get 10% off as privilege & access to a 30 minute hydro circuit session. Getting around It’s not massive, you can easily walk around to get where you need however there is a regular shuttle service that runs between the beach & main lobby area, you can just hop on & off. Overall we had a lot of fun and would definitely return.
Lots of lovely activities, enjoyed the blackjack games and the karaoke, very entertaining, Liz is the best at getting people to participate and an amazing entertainer. Just superb.
Soledad and alex was fantastic and managed to get my shy 10year to not only play but be so invested he won - thank you Soledad x

Ocean Riviera Paradise
