Riu Tequila

Loved the entertainment and party nights led by Noelberto (top bloke) and the team. Loads of fun things going on like the neon and white party, coconut festival and weekly foam party in the pool. The fitness like stretch and aqua fit with Daniel and Jackie was great too.

Amazing hotel for the price we paid- yes the rooms are a little dated but that is literally the only negative I can think of for this hotel. Rooms were clean, the staff are so incredibly friendly, the food was great and having the choice of the 4 restaurants was a great bonus (you can visit these as many times as you like). We thought the steak and Italian restaurants were the best, the Mexican restaurant at the beach was not good at all, we didn’t enjoy our meal here, it was like the food had been sat under the serving dish for a long time. The Chinese was ok for sushi & starters but the rest was not good but this might be personal preference. We always found something in the buffet restaurant when we ate there, lots of choice and fresh things being cooked. The lunch buffet at the beach was not great- too many flies around- we only ate here once and preferred to walk back up to tequila for our lunch. Kids entertainment on a night was brilliant, as was the kids pool. Although my son was too young for the kids club they still asked if he wanted to colour a picture and have it made onto a t-shirt which I thought was really kind. I would say this hotel has abit of everything, if you wanted a boozy holiday, the adults pool with swim up bar was always packed and sounded great fun but it also had the family side and it worked really well. Entertainment on a night was fantastic, probably the best all inclusive entertainment I’ve experienced, you can tell there is a lot of effort put into this. Drinks were fab, couldn’t fault anything with those. Beach was stunning! Plenty of palm trees providing shade, loads of beds, it never felt busy at the beach, it was very chilled. Seaweed was an issue on some days, staff worked tirelessly to clear the beach of this, just nature unfortunately. We were lucky that it wasn’t every day, would probably say it was really bad only 2-3 days of our 2 week holiday and we spent almost every day at the beach. All in all amazing family holiday and would return in a heartbeat.

It was alright. I stayed at Riu Tequila for 2 weeks and I’ve been to riu resorts many times. I would just not recommend to not go in the summer, it was really hot and the ocean was terrible. There were lots of seaweed at the shore and in the water, the water was also brown and yellow. I went to Playa Del Carmen about 2 years ago in September and the water was beautiful but this year in July it was horrible. There are about 5 pools and I really like the main one. The bus ride from the Cancun airport to the resort is about a 1 hour drive. The walk from the resort to the beach is about 10 minutes and you need to cross the rode, tho you can take the shuffle which is about 3 minutes, and the shuffle comes every 5-10 minutes. Staff are really kind and friendly and the rooms have everything you need but there was a lot of bugs in mine. The sports bar is always filled with people and always really loud but its really nice in there since theres air conditioning. The bar in the lobby (where the concerts happen) is awesome, they move so quickly and even tho a lot of times theres lines they move so fast. My room was really close to the lobby but theres a lot that are like 7-9 minutes away from the lobby which is a far walk. The food was good, but I’ve seen better. The Steakhouse is really nice, the appetisers are excellent tho they dont always cook the food the way you ask. The buffet was good, they always have the same stuff for lunch dinner and breakfast tho. I really liked the Italian restaurant tho, the fire alarm randomly went off in there which scared me but it was awesome there. Overall I liked it but I’ve stayed at better.

My boyfriend and I traveled to Playa del Carmen for vacation in July 2026. We actually stayed our first 5 nights at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya but decided to extend our trip and stay at the Tequila the rest of the time. We have stayed at Riu’s before and are Class members as we enjoy the free airport transportation perk, as well as the parties. The parties take place at the Tequila so when we came over for the white party we loved the layout of the Tequila, and very important to us, they have a sports bar, which the Palace does not. The property is well maintained, employees are kind and helpful, and we had a great time. The food is nothing to write home about, but for an all inclusive it’s a great value and we always have a great stay at a Riu! We would also like to shout out Andy at the front desk for his incredible patience and extra help and hospitality with us when we had a mixup with our booking!

We stayed at this resort for 14 nights and overall had a fantastic holiday. I would definitely recommend it to families and anyone looking for plenty to do throughout their stay. The staff were one of the biggest highlights. Every single member of the team was attentive, polite, friendly and always full of energy. They really made you feel welcome from the moment you arrived. Our room was always kept very clean, with fresh linen changed every other day, and the housekeeping team did a great job. The food was also excellent, with a huge variety available every day, so there was always something different to try. The entertainment was outstanding too. The RIU entertainment team were incredible, putting on fantastic shows every evening, and there were also loads of daytime activities to get involved in. The hotel has four pools, including an adults-only pool with a swim-up bar, all of which are a lovely size. The beach is only around a five-minute walk away, or you can hop on one of the golf carts if you don’t fancy walking. There were just a few things that could be improved. The pools were extremely warm, and you could actually feel warm water being pumped in from the jets. In such a hot climate, it would have been much nicer if cooler water was circulated so guests could properly cool down. We also didn’t notice the pools being cleaned during our stay, and they became quite dirty. I would also recommend avoiding white swimwear, as the pool water turned ours green. We were also disappointed that several of the speciality restaurants were closed for much of our holiday. The Chinese restaurant, in particular, was rarely open, which was a shame because when we finally managed to eat there it was absolutely amazing. We would have loved the opportunity to visit it more than once. One final point isn’t aimed at the hotel but may be useful for anyone booking through TUI. We went on the catamaran excursion that includes snorkelling over the underwater ruins. The TUI reps, boat crew and food were all fantastic, and we couldn’t fault them. However, the snorkelling itself felt very unsafe. There were lots of boats operating in the same area at the same time, with huge numbers of people in the water. We hadn’t realised we’d be swimming such a long distance away from the boat, weaving through ruins and coral while trying to keep up with our guide at quite a fast pace. It was incredibly difficult to stay with our group amongst all the other excursions, and boats were driving through the area while people were still in the water. My husband and father were both hit by boats during the excursion. Thankfully they weren’t seriously injured, but it was a frightening experience. I think this is something TUI should urgently review, particularly as it could be even more dangerous for young children, older guests or less confident swimmers. Despite these few negatives, we had an amazing holiday. The hotel is definitely worth visiting, especially for families. There is so much entertainment, plenty of activities, excellent food and wonderful staff who work incredibly hard to make your stay enjoyable.
