Historic Boutique Hotel Cattaro

We had a 2 bedroom suite which was well laid out for the 3 of us. The bed was softer than I prefer. There was a coffee machine in the room but the pods for it were 3.5 euros which seemed like a lot since most places give them complementary. The rooms are accessible by stone staircases , some without a bannister. This was difficult for me since I hurt my knee about a week earlier. The windows had dark shutters that seemed like we were not supposed to open them so there was no daylight in the room. The people at the front desk were friendly and gave good restaurant recommendations. When we booked the hotel said they arranged a car from the airport which was confirmed 2 weeks in advance. The car was not there and the transportation cost more than twice what they quoted us. Location in the middle of the square is convenient for shopping and exploring.

The hotel and location was great. However, the sewage smell in the room was horrid. They say it was from the ocean, but they should have warned us ahead of time. Also, they should warn guests in advance about the live music around the hotel. There was a band outside the walls, and they played until 2-3am or whenever raid started. The room shakes with the loud base music. We Asked for a little off the room for the inhaling of sewage, and no sleep, but the manager was too greedy to help. So as historic as the place is, having to sleep and inhale raw sewage was unacceptable.

Nice hotel bar and restaurant- frantic service but waitress was good. Centrally located in Old Town. No baby changing facilities available.

This was the first hotel that we stayed at during our Jules Verne ‘Montenegro Explorer’ tour, and we stayed there for 2 nights. The hotel is situated within the old town of Kotor, overlooking the Square of the Arms and just by the Sea Gate. The building itself used to be a theatre and looks lovely both inside and outside. We particularly liked the high-ceilinged breakfast room, and the balcony overlooking the square, where you could also have breakfast. The food and service were very good at breakfast, although the presence of some other tour groups meant that the staff sometimes struggled to keep on top of replenishing the food and clearing up the tables. We were allocated room 205, a Deluxe Room on the second floor, which was large and nicely decorated with a well-equipped bathroom, a king size bed and a seating area. We also had direct access to the long balcony which overlooks the square, with great views of the town. All of this should have made for a perfect stay in Kotor, but that’s not how things worked out. When I had booked our trip, I hadn’t realised that our visit would be during the 2-day Independence Day holiday (21st & 22nd May). And I also didn’t realise that the Square of the Arms is the main location for public events. It was therefore a surprise to find out that there were concerts in the square for the 2 nights that we were staying at the Hotel Cattaro – particularly given that we had booked via a tour operator with a local partner firm. I’m sure the very loud music and late nights were great for the locals who were celebrating, but for those of us in the hotel, it was a nightmare. Both the events went on until after midnight, and the wall of amplifier speakers meant that it was impossible to block out the noise, even with all the windows closed and using earplugs. The bass was so loud at points that the walls were vibrating. After a very early start on the day that we’d travelled to Montenegro, the last thing we needed was 2 further nights of poor sleep! So, if you are planning to stay at the Hotel Cattaro, please investigate if there will be any events on during your stay. And definitely avoid the 21st and 22nd of May if you want to get some sleep!

Classic old world palace turned hotel. Elegant and opulent, the wood work and finishing are from a different time when craftsmanship was valued and detail appreciated. The room was great and the bed comfortable, bathroom perfect and modern. The location is exceptional and the staff extremely helpful. We loved our stay.
