Casa das Calhetas

This very well preserved manor house is fulfilled with history and a good atmosphere. It is a great place if you like to gather your thoughts and rest. Casa das Calhetas is nothing like a standard holiday accommodation - you need to try it yourself.

We spent one night in late March, and we were given a room half in the ground. It was damp, with a slight mold and musty smell. The windows could not be opened, or even looked through unless we removed a curtain attached to the window. We were greeted warmly, with limited english, but not told which door to knock on if we needed anything, which we did as I had forgotten to ask for the internet password. The off season rate here was more than anywhere else we stayed on the island, and we had so much less. No view, no television, no fridge, no where to have or make a tea in the evening. I expressed my concerns to our host and with limited english I think she took offence as it is their home. We did have a portable heater, and nice breakfast served in an upstairs room for which we were grateful. We were up early and went for a walk as the musty air was bothering us. Our host is a Doctor and she was concerned asking if we were having an allergic/asthma response to the air. Our host mentioned they prefer a 3 night stay so they can get to know those staying with them. We booked through Booking.com and they accommodated us for the one night. I was sorry we left the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel to stay here for 7 Euros more per night.

On the first day of our honeymoon we arrived too early, but this was no problem for our host. We were treated to a lovely drink to commemorate this special moment. And then we were given a tour of the garden.. such a special place. The garden, building and room we slept in breathed history (built in the 18th/19th century), we felt like howling along with the dogs and other animals (at nightfall) to express our connection to this place. Breakfast is served either in a beautiful room, or on a terrace with ocean view. The breakfast itself was good. Lots of tea, coffee, juice, different breads, cheese, fruit. We would often sit for a very long time after we had eaten all of the breakfast. The showers were nice and warm. We had internet in our room. Good bed. And there was free fruit to eat as well in a room adjacent. There is a rocky beach at walking distance, where you will only find local people with their children. There is even a place to get cold drinks there. A beautiful historic bed and breakfast and a wonderful host.

We spent 4 nights in this lovely old mansion very close to the sea. The area is really quite and its not far from Ribeira. We have particularly appreciated the garden which holds beautiful flowers and a giant cedar. Owners very friendly. We can undoubtly recommend this place.

Mooie, rustige omgeving, zeer vriendelijke bediening. Eenvoudig maar rijkelijk ontbijt met streekproducten. Goed geslapen (goed bed). Zéér authentiek huisje met originele keuken ter decoratie. Heel aangenaam verblijf.
