Riu Republica

The infrastructure of the hotel is amazing. But they need a very serious intervention in personal's behavior. They are not informed about hygiene. I saw a waitor refilling the guest's water with the remaining water from another cup from another guest. That action made me to get my phone and write this review.

We visited Riu Republica last week. We were skeptical about going to a party resort, but since it was the off-season, we were up for giving it a try. Airport Many people will try to "help" you with your bags because they want a tip. Most of them do not work at the airport or for tour operators like Nexus. Be careful and say no. Sometimes you just have to be firm—many will give you attitude when turned down, but just ignore it and keep walking to your bus. Transfers The reps from Nexus were informative and fun, and the bus drivers handled the chaotic traffic calmly. It’s a quick 20–30 minute ride depending on how many resort drop-offs they have before yours. Reception We booked a king bed, but they initially assigned us two double beds. A quick, polite request got us switched to what we asked for. Attitude will get you nowhere here, so being courteous goes a long way. Room The resort is large, but the walks to the rooms are still easily manageable. The room itself was fine—nothing fancy, but functional. The bathroom door handle in room 2408 was broken and almost falling off completely. Hot water was fine until the last couple of days, when it became noticeably cooler. The fridge was well-stocked with pop, water, and tonic. The liquor dispensers were a bit dated and quirky to operate, but they worked. Riu App The app is very useful. It lists showtimes and makes it simple to order fridge refills or request extra room amenities. I did request extra whiskey twice, but it never arrived. Pools We tried several pools. The party pools (closer to the beach and to the right of the walkway) were fairly packed, but still fun. The larger pool had fewer people, though you could tell it saw a lot of action by how murky the water looked. Instead of staying on the right side, we started using the pools on the left. They have almost identical setups (with and without swim-up bars), but were much cleaner, quieter, and played background music that didn’t make you feel old (we aren’t the big party type). The pools near the lobby offered a similar relaxed vibe. All the pools could use some TLC—the grout and caulking around the filter fixtures were noticeably undermaintained. Some tiles just laying at the bottom of the pools. Beach The beach was lovely. They clean the area closest to the water, and there are plenty of chairs available. It can get a bit chaotic since chairs aren't neatly stacked or cleared, so arriving before 9:00 AM is your best bet for a good spot. The sargassum/seaweed is mulched up by machines, leaving small, firm pieces on the sand. They won't cut your feet, but they can be a mild annoyance. Waves were fun for most of the trip, but got dangerous at the end. Literally catch you off guard and the under current can easily put you in a dangerous spot. They look harmless until you're tossed like a load of clothing in the washer. Beach Vendors Just say no! They can be very persistent. One vendor took a slight sign of interest from me as an invitation to bag up items and drop them in my lap before we even discussed prices. You'll see everything offered: wooden art, tapestries, women's swimwear, hats, sunglasses, excursions, and photo ops with monkeys, birds, and lizards. On a positive note, several vendors were simply friendly, saying hi and chatting without being pushy. Food The food was great! Being able to walk right into restaurants without reservations was convenient, and the lines moved quickly. We ate breakfast at the main buffet for the first half of the week, but switched to the buffet at the top of the resort later on because it was much less crowded. For a la carte, we tried the Asian restaurant—the sushi was good (they also serve sushi at the main buffet every 2–3 days). Jerk Chicken Area This spot deserves its own category because the chicken is amazing—always perfectly cooked with a delicious, spicy sauce (which you can add extra of). Highly recommended! They also serve hot dogs and hamburgers. The hot dogs were decent, but I skipped the burgers since they weren't cooked on an open grill and I didn't want to risk it. Entertainment Not bad at all! On the first night, a guy played electric guitar, which was great. The main stage shows were solid; one night an acrobat hit his head pretty hard during a trick, but he bounced right back. (No pun intended) Bars There are tons of bars, so if one is packed, just look around for another nearby. The service was consistently better at the quieter bars, with far less rush. Final Thoughts The Good: Outstanding Staff: Deivi at the restaurant was incredibly personable! Isabel at the "La Guira" Bar was our absolute favorite, and the tall waitress(I forgot her name) working alongside her was equally fantastic—both provided warm, exceptional service. Dauris at the smaller buffet always had our coffee, mimosas, and water ready before we even sat down. Thank you to everyone! There are plenty of different areas to explore, and the resort is very walkable overall. However, staying near the far end means you'll regret forgetting something in your room during 35°C+ heat! The palm trees are mature and well maintained. Such beauty! The Bad: As noted, pool tile maintenance and caulking need attention for a resort of this scale. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums weren't overwhelming, but come prepared. They didn't bother me much, but they targeted my fiancée and left some nasty bites. The Ugly: The primary downside was the entitlement, rudeness, and lack of consideration from other guests. I would bet that 97–98% of reported "food poisoning" cases are actually caused by bad guest hygiene rather than the resort kitchen. People touch food with their hands, cut infront of you, take excess food they won't eat, block main walkways to take selfies, and show zero awareness of others around them. We even saw drunk guests picking up abandoned, half-empty drinks off our table to finish them. One group of 8 or 9 people occupied two tables with at least 10 unfinished drinks EACH hovering around them. The guest behavior was easily the worst part of the trip. Conclusion: Despite the crowds, our off-season getaway was a success because we really needed a break, and set our own positivity. I wouldn’t expect a super refined experience here, and I strongly suggest doing extra research before booking during peak season—the resort felt very busy even at partial capacity.

Had an amazing time, didn’t really get to enjoy everything i’ve seen in youtube videos or that i planned for my stay just because the place is huge, and with the alcohol and 🍃 you get there, makes exploring even more hard when you can barely walk😭 Rhada at the sports bar, my brother man i wish i could take him back home with me (pause) that’s my dawgs fr, amazing energy with him and his co worker and always served me with no problems. the guest always make the experience better and the last 2 days we had there was the best. last year in 2025 a girl went missing at this resort on the beach, from what i can tell you, as a guy going to that beach at 3-4 in the morning, there’s dangerous people out there. with no lights and all the beaches connected, who knows if she even drown, or was taken down the beach to another resort and taken where there’s no cameras hense why they didn’t find her. i’ve been there and seen it with my own 2 eyes how dangerous it is. you think you’re talking to one person and you don’t even know that they have 6-7 people around them behind trees in the dark . so please even me being a male boxer with years of experience, we’re in a whole different country where they know the ins and outs. absolutely don’t go on the beach past 12. other than that the resort is a fkn blast and you’ll love it.

It's one of the worse hotels I've stayed in. Being English the staff completely ignore you and serve the Spanish speaking residents first. The food in all the restaurants is not marked up so you don't know what your eating and when you ask you get an attitude like your supposed to know what it is. I would think twice if your English coming here

Amazing place. It was our second trip there and not disapointed. Other reviews are miss leading. We are rebooking for next year
