We have just returned from a two-week stay at Riu Republica in Punta Cana, and honestly, it was one of the most disappointing holiday experiences we have ever had. We paid £5,500 for this holiday, expecting a relaxing all-inclusive break and a lovely anniversary away. Instead, we were left frustrated, disgusted by some of the conditions, and wondering how this hotel meets the standards we expected when booking through TUI. ROOMS AND CLEANLINESS Our experience started badly. The check-in process felt rushed, and we were simply handed a map and sent on our way. We were unhappy with our initial room and had to change rooms on arrival. We had requested a sea view in advance for our anniversary, but our room overlooked trees. Both rooms had a strong smell of mould and damp, as did the main restaurant. Housekeeping was extremely inconsistent. Rooms were not cleaned properly or daily, bedding was stained, and sheets were not changed regularly even when we left the card requesting a change. Some towels and bath mats had dirty stains that looked similar to blood or faecal matter. On one occasion, our room was cleaned but no bottled water or drinks were left. We had to go to reception to request water so we could take medication. We also have video evidence of a stairwell leading to our rooms being covered in vomit and remaining in that condition for at least an hour. This was a shared access route used by guests, and it was absolutely disgusting. FOOD AND DRINKS The main restaurant had the same unpleasant smell of mould and damp. Food presentation was poor, and some bread had curled-up edges, giving the impression that it had been left out for a long time. In one of the à la carte restaurants, we witnessed staff turning a tablecloth over rather than replacing it for the next guests. This was particularly off-putting given the other hygiene concerns we had already experienced. The hotel also advertises premium drinks, but what we were served did not reflect what we would consider a premium offering. Some drinks appeared to be cheap, lower-tier products. We have photographs of the drinks we received and feel the advertised experience did not match reality. THE SWIMMING POOLS The pools were dirty on a daily basis, with flies and beetles in the water. We saw a cockroach on a pool ramp that was still there the following morning. One of the swim-up bar pools had water that appeared yellow, which raised further concerns about the condition of the water. We also witnessed holidaymakers vomiting into the pools. On another occasion, two guests were engaging in sexual activity in a pool during the day, which was completely inappropriate in a shared swimming area. Our white swimwear also became yellow after contact with the pool water. We cannot say what caused the discolouration, but it certainly did nothing to reassure us about the water quality. Both my partner and I suffered from sickness and diarrhoea for three days during the holiday. We cannot confirm the cause, but given the hygiene concerns we experienced, it added to our worries. A SERIOUS CONCERN ABOUT GUEST SAFETY One of the most disturbing things we witnessed was a man who appeared heavily intoxicated lying on the ground beside the pool in temperatures of around 30°C. A member of the entertainment team approached him, appeared to laugh, and then walked away without seeming to offer assistance. Other staff also appeared to be aware of the situation. The man subsequently rolled into the swimming pool face down. Fortunately, another holidaymaker was in the pool and witnessed what happened. We genuinely believe that, without someone else being there, the situation could have ended in tragedy. Watching this unfold was deeply upsetting. Whatever the circumstances, a guest lying in a vulnerable condition beside a swimming pool should be treated as a potential medical emergency, not something to laugh at or ignore. We hope the hotel investigated this incident and reviewed its staff response. MAINTENANCE AND CUSTOMER SERVICE Basic maintenance was also lacking. Some public toilet door locks were broken, meaning the doors could not be secured properly, and we noticed broken lighting in certain areas. Customer service was disappointing throughout our stay. Communication was often difficult when asking for basic things such as water or room cleaning, and we sometimes felt staff avoided us when they realised we spoke English. Drinks were also brought incorrectly on several occasions. The daytime entertainment team did little to encourage us to participate in activities, and we felt the level of engagement with guests was poor. THE MANAGER’S RESPONSE SAYS IT ALL When we initially tried to raise our concerns, reception told us there was no management on site. We later spoke to a manager by the pool and explained some of the issues we had experienced. His response was astonishing. He told us: “When my mum comes and stays, she stays Riu Palace. When my cousins come and stay, they stay here.” He then said: “If you want 5*, stay in Riu Palace hotel.” We were not asking for Palace-level luxury. We were asking for clean rooms, hygienic towels and bedding, properly maintained facilities, clean swimming pools, and staff who take guest safety seriously. These are basic expectations, not luxury extras. The manager’s response felt dismissive and did nothing to reassure us that our concerns were being taken seriously. OUR EXPERIENCE AT RIU CARIBE We stayed at Riu Caribe in Mexico last year. Despite being a four-star resort, the cleanliness, maintenance and overall guest experience were significantly better than what we encountered here. Riu Caribe was also a party hotel, with parties and entertainment taking place on site. However, everything was managed so well that you would never have known there were parties happening elsewhere in the resort. Being a party hotel is not an excuse for poor hygiene, inadequate maintenance or concerns about guest safety. OUR FINAL VERDICT We paid £5,500 for two weeks that were supposed to be relaxing and special, particularly as we were celebrating our anniversary. Instead, the holiday was overshadowed by poor cleanliness, disappointing food and drinks, concerns about the swimming pools, inconsistent housekeeping, maintenance issues and a deeply concerning incident involving guest safety. We appreciate that no hotel can guarantee a perfect holiday, and we never expected five-star luxury. However, we did expect reasonable standards and the experience advertised when we booked. We have photographs and video evidence supporting some of the concerns described above, and we have raised a formal complaint with TUI. We will not be returning to Riu Republica, and based on our experience, we would struggle to recommend it to anyone expecting a clean, well-maintained and properly managed all-inclusive resort. A very expensive holiday that left us thoroughly disappointed.
3/5 Stars – Come for the Incredible Party Atmosphere, Not the Rooms! Travel & Logistics: Flying and traveling with Sunwing and WestJet was completely flawless—everything with them was perfect from start to finish! Pro-tip for travelers: It’s best to book an early flight leaving for your trip and a late flight coming home so you can truly maximize your vacation time on the beach! The Good & The Vibe: The atmosphere at Riu Republica is unmatched! Like everyone says, you don't come here for luxury—you come for the fun. The Pink, Jungle, and Neon parties were absolutely phenomenal, complete with free face painting and great performers. The shuttle transfers to the RIU complex parties were so impressively well-organized. The grounds are beautiful, the beach is gorgeous with warm ocean water and soft sand, and the pools are buzzing. Food-wise, the buffet was good with decent variety, though the à la cartes were just average. If you love swim-up bars, packed parties, and meeting people, you will love the energy here! Where They Need Improvement: Unfortunately, the room experience left a lot to be desired. The room felt tired and definitely needs an update. Our king bed was hard as a rock, and the room setup was bare: just one top sheet, no duvet, one small blanket, and no promised robes. We only received one shower towel per person with no face cloths, and the mini-fridge was never refilled unless we walked to the front desk to ask. The biggest issue was the A/C—it was set to 20°C but stayed stuck at 26°C the entire time. Staff overall seemed bored or annoyed, even when tipped. Additionally, the pool activities could also use a bit more energy, and drink lines were long at times. Summary: Ultimately, we enjoyed ourselves because the party energy and weather were amazing, but better room maintenance, functional A/C, and friendlier service would make this resort a total winner. Go in with the right expectations: enjoy the hot weather, beautiful beach, and insane party scene!
My fiance and I thought the resort was nice. After day 3 - he noticed some bites on his legs in which he figured to be mosquito bites. Unfortunately after returning home I noticed bites on my legs which were plenty and very itchy. After some medical attention - the bites were confirmed as bed bug bites. Please be sure to check bed prior to staying. Not cool at all
October 5th - October 19th 2026 Having just returned from a 14 night stay in this hotel is by far the worst we have ever stayed in for Noise, Cleanliness, Food and Overall Customer Care. Our room was lined with a black mould around the edges of the ceiling, Light switches loose, large cracks in the wall condensation (water) running down walls causing puddles on the floor, Bedding and towels marked and stained. All our cloths were damp each day Our balcony view was a mass of palm leaves right up to the balcony itself with no view what so ever. The balcony doors DO NOT LOCK. There is a two tier serving system that stands out a mile with servers seemingly treating South Americans and Americans totally different to Europeans with drinks and basic services. watch out for the large amount of ice and little amount of shots or soft drinks !!!! We did ask reception to help out with a few complaints (Different room, Fridge fill ups, state of our room etc ALL to no avail) We do have photos to back all our complaints. In the 14 nights we were there 5 days of problems with the lift not working and at 69 cause some discomfort having to walk up four flight of stairs The noise level at night was well and truly HORRENDOUS Screaming shouting and crying, we witness vomiting, sick on the floor around the pool areas along with bones left from the chicken provided from the afternoon chicken shack. If you are above the age of 40yrs this is not a hotel for you, and it is NOT A 4* 5* accommodation !!!! More like 2* and that is only because of the Beach and Weather. A VERY DISATISFIED CUSTOMER
Setting aside the hotel's good facilities, and great food (service at the restaurants can improve though), I'd like to draw attention to the behavior of some of the guests. Several of them, likely due to excessive drinking, behaved very poorly — you could hear people screaming and yelling in the hallways, making it nearly impossible to get a good night's rest. It's ironic that, being an adults-only hotel, you never really feel like you're among adults at all.
